Like many, I am a complete Holiday junkie. The very minute Santa Clause rolls in at The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, I am pulled into the magnetic force that is the Christmas spirit. I love the lights that go up in my town during the Christmas season, I love the decorations everywhere and anywhere, and I don’t care that the music is just the same 10 songs regurgitated by various artists, I will always be a sucker for “Jingle Bell Rock.” Hell, I even like “The 12 Days Of Christmas.” Especially the Muppet version. But one of the greatest things about the overall ~*Christmas Vibe*~ is the time you spend with your family, friends, husbands, wives, pets, or whoever you’re closest to watching Christmas movies.
So grab a blanket and some hot cocoa because here’s a list of my personal top 10 Christmas movies of all time (and some honorable mentions.)
Let's start with the honorable mentions:
The Night Before (2015)
I remember not expecting much walking into The Night Before. My sister and I were bored, wanted to see a movie in the middle of the day, and figured the trailers were decent enough. Turns out, the movie is hysterical. I don’t think that there was a 5 minute stretch where I didn’t have at least one good laugh. This, in my opinion, is one of the most underrated Holiday movies of all time, and even though it probably won’t go down in history as a classic, I think everyone reading should give it a watch.
Mean Girls (2004)
Is it technically a Christmas movie? No. Does it have an iconic Christmas scene? Yes. Plus, it’s one of the best comedies ever made. You go, Glenn Coco!
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Definitely give this a watch if you love the quirky oddness of Tim Burton’s work, but haven’t gotten around to this one. The unique style is interesting, and Winona Ryder looks way different as a blonde. Whether this one is a true blue Christmas movie or not is debatable, but I say it totally counts. Also, how is he functioning with scissors for hands?
The Santa Clause (1994)
A little dark for a movie intended for Children, but Disney has been known for having a bit of a dark side, (The Fox and The Hound just isn’t fair.) Aside from the whole killing Santa thing, the movie is charming, really.
Home Alone (1990)
It’s not realistic. There’s no way a kid could successfully prank his way out of that dangerous scenario. It doesn’t have the greatest ratings, but who even cares? It’s a classic. Merry Christmas, you filthy critics.
And now, The top ten.
10. Frosty The Snowman (1969)
Frosty has a special place in my heart. Frosty represents magic and fun. He’s just wonderful and lovely, and if you don’t get at least a little sad when he melts then you have no soul and I’m judging you.
9. A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)
I relate to Charlie Brown. I relate to the tree he gets. Another one that’s just pure nostalgia. Snoopy is always everything.
8. Gremlins (1984)
This dark Christmas comedy will have you rolling with laughter while being deeply disturbed simultaneously. It will also make you feel extremely torn as to whether or not you’d be responsible enough to own a mogwai.
7. Bad Santa (2003)
Bad Santa is a black comedy about an alcoholic con artist and his elf-sidekick who use seasonal Santa Clause jobs as a front to rob malls. They do this every Christmas. The movie delivers the funny (and a lot of dirty humor,) but it also delivers a jarring depiction of addiction and mental health.
6. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
I love The Nightmare Before Christmas because it doubles as a Christmas movie AND A Halloween movie. It’s the best of both worlds, and also one of the best reviewed movies of all time. This one’s also a little dark (Can you tell I like the dark ones?) but it is definitively the best Christmaween movie out there.
5. Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer (1964)
Old school stop-motion animation, adorable characters and musical numbers, and a happy ending. What’s not to love? (Aside from Santa being kind of a dick until the end.) This one just gives me the warm and fuzzy’s every time I watch it.
4. Christmas Vacation (1989)
In my opinion, the funniest Christmas movie of all time, and it’s way too quotable. Everything from, “Dad, did you bring the saw?” to, “SHITTER’S FULL!,” is just comedic gold in every way, shape and form.
3. How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966/2000)
The original is timeless. The Jim Carey version is hilarious. “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and “Where Are You, Christmas,” are great songs. Greatness. Greatness all around.
2. Elf (2003)
Although Christmas Vacation is the funniest, Elf is a close 2nd. Elf is damn near perfect in every way. Will Ferrel does an amazing job, as does the rest of the cast. It’s just cute and whimsical and funny, and I wouldn’t change a single thing about it. Treat every day like Christmas. There’s room for everyone on the nice list. The best way to spread Christmas Cheer, is singing loud for all to hear.
...And my all-time favorite...
A Christmas Story (1983)
THE Christmas movie. The queen mother of Christmas movies. This is my favorite through-and-through, and I end up watching it like 4 times every Christmas (TNT marathons it every Christmas, FYI.) This movie is the perfect way to wrap up the season and put it away for next year.
Now remember, these are just my top 10. There are plenty of classics that didn’t make the list because either I haven’t gotten around to seeing them, or it’s been so long since I’ve seen them that I don’t really remember them. If a movie you love didn’t make the list, feel free to leave a comment so everyone can check it out!
Happy Holidays, everyone!
