Fictional deaths in books and movies have a bigger impact on us than we anticipate. Death is scary, it is unavoidable, tragic, and sometimes very sudden and unexpected, which I think only adds to the sadness factor. I will admit shamelessly that I am guilty of sobbing at the death of characters on multiple occasions. Here are a few of the deaths that I am still not over, and most likely will never be.
1. Derek Shepard/McDreamy in "Grey's Anatomy"
Anyone who knows me well knows how obsessed I am with "Grey's Anatomy" and Derek Shepard (the love of my life). His unexpected death in season 11 completely took me by surprise and most definitely brought me to tears. He lost his life while trying to save the lives of others in an accident... why do bad things happen to good people?
2. George O'Malley in "Grey's Anatomy"
While we're on the subject of "Grey's," the death of George O'Malley is another that I am still so sad about. George also died trying to save another person. In my opinion, George's death was completely unnecessary. He was such a sweet guy and did nothing to deserve the fate that Shonda Rhimes dealt him. (Still upset with you, Shonda.)
3. Marley in "Marley & Me"
What could honestly be more heart-wrenching than a poor innocent dog dying? Any pet owner knows the bond that is shared between animals and humans; we basically regard them as our children. Seeing a death like this makes you think about your pet, and consequently brings you to tears.
4. Jack Dawson in "Titanic"
Talk about a major throw back! Even though this is an older movie, it still manages to break my heart. Witnessing the young, and extremely attractive, Leonardo DiCaprio dying is traumatizing to most of the female population. His death is even more depressing considering he died to save his true love (even though I am sure we can all agree there was enough room on that door for the both of them). That kind of chivalry is unheard of now.
5. Augustus Waters in "The Fault In Our Stars"
I wish someone would have prepared me and told me to bring a tissue box into the theatre. This John Greene love story of two kids with cancer had me crying hysterically for at least half an hour. Hazel Grace's letter she read to Augustus at his fake funeral was so poetic and touching. I really hope my significant other can say the same breathtaking things about me when my time comes, which is also terrifying to think about.
6. Ellie in "Up"
Ellie is Carl Fredricksen's deceased wife, aka the cute old man's deceased wife. I never expected a children's movie to be so extremely heartbreaking, after all, it is aimed at a younger audience. The flashback it shows of them during the movie is what really got to me. I think the fact that he's old and alone makes it even worse. It is like seeing an old man eat alone in a restaurant, it makes you so sad that you want to go give him a hug.
7. Jamie Sullivan in "A Walk To Remember"
Nicholas Sparks is notorious for creating sappy love stories that generally end with the death of a character. In fact, it happens so often we can almost expect it. Even so, nothing could prepare me for Jamie's death. Since a cure for cancer is yet to be discovered, it remains a very real factor that has effected the lives of many. People can relate to losing a loved one due to cancer.
8. Both Allie and Noah in "The Notebook"
Another Nicholas Sparks book, shocker! "The Notebook" is known to pretty much everyone as the ultimate chick flick. I have heard too many instances of girls forcing their boyfriends to watch it with them. Although it really is a great story, it has a bittersweet ending. It warmed my heart that Allie and Noah got to peacefully pass together because of natural causes, nonetheless it did cause me to shed a tear.
9. Lori Grimes in "The Walking Dead"
The Walking Dead, another one of my favorite shows of all time. Lori, wife of Rick and mother of Carl, passes away while giving birth to her second child. She makes the ultimate sacrifice for her child, a sacrifice most mothers are willing to make. This made me appreciate my mom's unwavering love more. Although I have always held a grudge against Lori after she cheated on Rick with his best friend Shane, I couldn't help but feel deep sorrow at her passing.
10. Shmuel and Bruno in "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas"
The sight of children dying has got to be the most depressing thing. Shmuel and Bruno die in a gas chamber at the end of the movie, and I struggled to contain myself while watching that scene. Children are so happy, innocent, and loving, so watching them both pass away was difficult to bear. I think this movie delivers a powerful message to human kind.
