Team StarKid is a group of friends who met in college that began making parody musicals. Their most popular musical, "A Very Potter Musical," has over 9 million views on YouTube! This hardworking group of individuals has been posting their shows on YouTube since 2009. One of the founding members of this group was Darren Criss, an actor many know because of "Glee." I’ve been lucky enough to see two of their shows live, as well as see them in concert. This summer, they are putting on a show in Chicago called "Firebringer," which will be their 10th show. In honor of this, I decided to rank my top 10 StarKid songs!
Warning: there may be inappropriate language in the songs linked below. StariKd is known for their crude humor, which is showcased in their songs.
1. "Not Alone"
"Not Alone" has been one of my favorite StarKid songs for a long time. Darren Criss wrote this song, and first performed it for "A Very Potter Musical." He has recorded it twice after the musical, once for his EP entitled "Human" and again as a single. This is one of Darren’s favorite songs to perform, and I love hearing him and the other StarKids perform it live.
2. "Boy Toy"
"Boy Toy" is a song from "Little White Lie," a web show that Team StarKid produced before they stared producing musicals and posting them online. The web show is full of hilarious songs, but my favorite has always been "Boy Toy," a fun and peppy tune sung by Lauren Lopez.
3. "Gotta Get Back To Hogwarts"
This is the first song in "A Very Potter Musical," and the first song I ever heard by StarKid. It is a long song, clocking in at 11 minutes in the musical, but it’s one that brought many fans to the group. Darren has also said that he sees this as the true beginning of StarKid. The song is sung by the entire "AVPM" company in the musical, and reprised in "A Very Potter Sequel" as the final number.
4. "Granger Danger"
"Granger Danger" is a fun song from "A Very Potter Musical." It is a duet between Ron and Draco about their love for Hermione Granger. Sung by Joey Richter and Lauren Lopez, the duet showcases two of my favorite StarKids!
5. "Harry Freakin' Potter"
"Harry Freakin' Potter" is a song in "A Very Potter Sequel," explaining the story of Harry Potter. It is a fun way to begin the musical, and one of the classic StarKid songs! This song features vocals from Joey Richter, Jamie Lyn Beatty and Darren Criss, as well as the "AVPS" cast members.
6. "Take Off Your Clothes"
"Take Off Your Clothes" is is one of my favorite songs from "Twisted." It’s just what you expect from a StarKid show: slightly raunchy, but humorous. The vocals from Jeff Blim and Rachael Soglin are amazing in this song, and when I saw this show live the crowd loved it!
7. "Days Of Summer"
"Days of Summer" is featured in "A Very Potter Sequel." It is a simple song at the end of the musical, and it tells about the importance of friends and how Hogwarts brought them together. The song is sung by the company of "AVPS."
8. "I Wanna Be"
"I Wanna Be" is a song from "Starship," one of StarKid's earlier musicals and one put on almost entirely with puppets. This song is sung by the entire cast, and is a fun beginning to the show. It also does a good idea of setting up the plot of she show, as the main character sings about his dream of being a Starship Ranger.
9. "Dream A Little Harder"
"Dream A Little Harder" is also from "Twisted," a musical that does for Jafar what "Wicked" does for the Wicked Witch. This is the opening number for the musical, and it sounds quite a lot like "Belle" from "Beauty and the Beast." Showcasing Dylan Saunders' amazing voice, this song is a great way to start one of my favorite StarKid musicals.
10. "Kick It Up A Notch"
"Kick It Up A Notch" is another song from "Starship." The show is put on mostly with puppets, but the songs from the show are still amazing. "Kick It Up A Notch" is sung by Dylan Saunders and the cast of "Starship." Dylan Saunders has an amazing voice which is showcased in this number.
These are just a few of my favorite StarKid songs. If you’re looking for a fun, hilarious way to spend a summer night, just watch one of their many musicals posted on YouTube. Don't forget to keep an eye out for "Firebringer" when it is released!
