Tell The World (Or Just Mom) I'm Coming Home

Some college students dread visiting home on breaks but with it comes the love, acceptance, and food that only a mom can provide.

Tell The World (Or Just Mom) I'm Coming Home
Amy Parker

No matter if your house is near or far, going home to see your family is always a refreshing change from the fast pace of college life. Some of us get to go home more often than others. Some of us have to travel farther than others. And some of us look forward to seeing our family more than others. But no matter the situation, every college student returns to college feeling a little bit more whole than they did before visiting their family. Every family member that you get to reconnect with is important but there’s one who tends to be a little more welcoming than the rest: Mom.

Mom is typically the one who will do your laundry when you return home. She knows how lazy her child is and she knows that one of the main reasons you come home is so that you can get a free load of washing. She even goes the extra mile and folds them for you when they come out of the wash. She may not enjoy doing extra laundry for you but she is always willing because she missed you while you were away. Doing one load of laundry for you is her way of showing that she is still there for you when you need her and that she cares about your wellbeing.

Home cooked meals are another large part of why college kids visit their families and in most cases, your mom is the one who prepares these meals. College meal plans are great for the convenience but no one can love them forever. There’s just something about a home cooked meal that cannot be replaced by dining hall fluff. Sometimes your mom will even ask you ahead of time what you want for dinner when you come home because she knows that there’s probably something that you miss having. She cares so much about you that she is willing to cook for hours just to give you your favorite meal in your favorite place.

The greatest thing about coming home and seeing your mom is not the free food or laundry, but it is the feeling of love and acceptance that she continuously gives you when you return. There will be hugs and smiles, maybe even some happy tears. She will ask you endless questions about how college is going. She will take you shopping and she will sit on the couch and just watch TV with you. There may be some nagging or some arguments but at the end of the day, she is so happy to see you return that these arguments don’t matter. She’s happy that her baby is home safe again and she wants to spend as much time with you as possible. Seeing the rest of your family is great. But there’s something about seeing your mom that makes the whole world right again. It refills you with an energy that you didn’t even know that you needed. Even if you weren’t looking forward to going home, you will definitely feel a tinge of sadness when you leave because you know that you won’t feel whole again until the next time you return home and are reunited with your mom.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
