A year ago, I was a squishy, 19-year-old procrastinating on her Spring semester finals.
There were endless possibilities of procrastination. I could learn a trick! I could learn an instrument! I could sleep!!!
But no. I took a different route.
I was participating in a thread in a Facebook meme group about Hamilton songs, except about the 2016 Spring presidential primaries.
Then it happened.
A google doc happened that was a Hamilton parody about Jeb Bush's failed primary campaign. It was me and about 18 other people that worked endlessly in procrastination for a month to ensure that this parody was worth reading. It covered all 47 songs of the hit broadway musical, filled with annotations of real primary happenings.
Luckily for us, the name came easy: Jeb! An American Disappointment. The exclamation point to get away from the Bush name may have hurt Jeb!, but it sure did help us.
I may be biased, but it is probably the best Hamilton parody ever. My biggest contribution to the parody sums up the whole parody and the presidential primary in general - "Who Wins, Who Drops, Who Memes Your Story."
Now, the work that went into this procrastination was grueling. We made sure the lyrics were factually accurate, clever, the meter was close to perfect, and the plot was riveting.
To this day, I may even venture to say it is one of the best projects I've ever been a part of.
Well, on April 20, 2016, the Internet decided it was worth a look.
The musical, somehow - with no push of our own - became viral, being covered by AV Club, Vulture, and even Vanity Fair.
It felt surreal. But warranted. It was probably the best thing on the Internet at that time.
In 2017, as I write this article, we have passed our one year anniversary of virality. We still talk to each other regularly and are proud of our accomplishments. Cornell even just did a reading of it! Let me tell you, none of us go to Cornell. We actually all go to McGill University in Canada.
Anyway, I've been very lucky to come across these people. They are possibly some of the most hyperintelligent, kind, and politically aware people I have ever met. And together, we have created a sensation. Thank you, other Jeb!: An American Disappointment writers.
