DISCLAIMER: This article idea came from the fact that I just finished writing an article for this week, a very good article at that, and it did not save because technology is a letdown.
What I don't seem to understand is why we love technology so much, love all the new gadgets and apps that come out, and treat each piece of technology with such care, it resembles a child, if all it does is let us down time and time again.
How many times have you written a paper for a class or something personal, and all of a sudden your computer freezes or turns off right before you save it? It's happened to me probably 156 times. Even though I am a religious saver, all of these new "technologies" have automatic savers, and it's tricked me into thinking I was safe. No one is safe.
How many times have you been on the phone with someone and been trying to find directions or look up a bank statement and all of a sudden your phone screen freezes? Or it goes black and you can still hear the person talking, but can't hang up to figure out the issue? Technology is just constant frustration and disappointment. We put all our faith into a screen and if it lets us down we are at the will of the world. We are useless as humans without technology.
I can tell you right now I would not get anywhere without a GPS. I can navigate the five or six roads I go on everyday, but tell me to go somewhere new and the GPS is on before I even have the opportunity to get lost.
But just as the rest of technology, my GPS has taken me to Narnia and back just to get somewhere supposedly 15 minutes away. Another inevitable let down.
And of course, the chargers for all of these technologies break all the time. When is the last time an iPhone cord lasted you longer than a couple months? Because I seem to have to get a new one almost as often as my phone freaks out on me.
We are useless without it and we rely on it far too often. We all need to get rid of computers and get typewriters, because it'll never not save on you. Yes, you can't backspace, but then it will make us all pay more attention to what we are writing.
Obviously we can't live without our new found technologies, but with their constant let down, I don't want to rely on them as much. I'm going back to saving after every word I type, and probably yelling at my phone later today for sucking.
Thank you technology.
