Ten years ago, the average young adult’s morning routine would consist of waking up, brushing their teeth, and getting dressed. Nowadays, every young adult’s morning routine consists of waking up, checking all of their social media outlets, getting dressed, and taking a couple selfies before leaving the house. Recently, and by recently I mean this morning, I was scrolling through my news feed on Facebook and I came across an interesting meme. It read, today kids have iPods, when I was a kid I had a jump rope. It is astonishing how much technology has progressed over the years, yet the unfortunate truth regarding its considerable advancement is that it is critically affecting youth today.
Children are constantly influenced by media whether it is by television, music, social media, or video games. If you look outside your window the street is bare. If you looked outside a few years back, you would see a number of kids playing hopscotch, playing sports, or even jumping rope. When I was younger, I was always playing outside whether it was with my friends or brothers and the only time I watched TV was with my family at night. Instead of playing outside, kids today are playing Temple Run on their iPads. Instead of playing chutes and ladders kids today are watching their 3D televisions. The fact that there is a product in existence called a “selfie stick” hurts my inner 90’s kid.
Technology has made life too easy and now it is even affecting kids and as a result, affecting our future. It is making us lazier and lazier as it progresses. It has come to a point where touch screen phones and SIRI had been invented because pushing a button is too much work. This is negatively affecting children today. In the future, they will not only be physically lazier, but also mentally lazier. Being hands on, using paint with our hands, or writing with a paper and pencil will eventually be diminished. Laptops are being installed everywhere, whether it is in schools or doctor’s offices. Eventually, everything will be computerized. We are too dependent on technology and it is wrong that we are instilling this in kids because they are our future.
