I am not a political person by any stretch of the imagination. Politics either bore or disgust me in every possible way they can. However, I believe in women's rights and equality. Not in the bra-burning, "Men Are Pigs" way, but in the way where all people regardless of gender, race, and so on are all given equal opportunities in all ways. Unfortunately, the distribution of rights towards women and the LGBTQ+ community has stirred up massive controversy within the past few months alone. In Taylor Swift's recent case, she not only stands up for herself but for future generations of oppressed people, artist or other.
I fully admit to not knowing much regarding legal documents of this nature, but I know what it is to make an artistic creation. I was eight years old when I bought Taylor Swift's first album, and it was fangirl bliss from then on. Her music always gave me hope as well as entertainment. Especially as a writer, Taylor's music inspires me the most because of the intricate detail and sincere passion she placed and continues to place within each song and each album.
What the people at Big Machine Records are doing is against the true nature of what creating art is. All they seem to be concerned with, in this case, is saving their faces which has little to do with music. The statements made against her by other artists like Justin Bieber and Demi Lovato are not those of musicians wishing to spread genuine musical messages with the world. Instead, they are choosing to side against a fellow artist in a situation that could have just as easily happened to them since all involved started out very young. Thankfully a multitude of artists like Ariana Grande, Halsey, and Alessia Cara have spoken out in support of Taylor on this issue because they understand the light and dark side of the industry they work in.
I could never imagine someone telling me that a story that I poured a piece of my very existence was going to be owned by anyone other than me. So I believe that Taylor should fight for what is rightfully hers just as others have unfortunately had to since the beginning of time. What this entire controversy shows is that people need to be far more aware of contractual detail than some of us are. At the end of the day, Taylor Swift deserves the right to own the work she created as a musician with both an open mind and open heart, and I'm sure she will put up a bigger fight before this is over with. End of story.
