My body is a canvas; it is my canvas. No one owns it except for myself; therefore, I can make my own decisions about my body. People will judge, they always do. They say, “It’s just part of a millennial phase” or, “You’ll regret that when you’re older, trust me.” Why should I trust you? Are inside my brain, my heart or my blood? Are you able to dictate decisions for me?
We are told it is trashy, that it is unprofessional, that we will never get a job because of it and that we will regret the decision. People will be personal with you, even strangers: they will ask, “Did it hurt?” “What does it mean?” or “How much did it cost?” Anyone who thinks they have authority over us feels the need to inquire about decisions we make. Some people believe that tattoos are the worst thing we can do to our bodies.
The human body is a canvas. We are able to paint ourselves how we want. Sure, some people will regret the art they decide to imprint on their skin, but that is rare, and most tattoo owners see their tattoos as works of art, because that's what they are. Whether it has a meaning or not, we do not owe an explanation to anyone about the choices we make.
No, you cannot touch it.
Yes, it did hurt. In fact, I bled.
Yes, it did cost a lot of money, but my finances are of no business of yours. I do not ask you how much your car cost because I realize that it is a personal matter.
Tattoos are not a generational thing, like most older people think. The difference between this generation and the ones before us, is that we are more accepting of people who choose to alter their bodies how they want. Some may not agree with those choices, but we have learned to keep that to ourselves and not make a public statement of disgust. We have realized that a tattoo is simply a work of art on the skin, and in no way, shape or form changes a person’s character.
Tattoos are beautiful, meaningful or just interesting to look at. I own my body and will continue to design it how I please. Why should it matter what I have on my skin? The inside is what is important anyway, right? Never let someone shame for you owning a tattoo; it is your life. If they choose not to like you anymore, then that is a shallow person, and don’t waste another second of your life on them.
