Tasting Brown

Check out the amazing food at Brown!

I have always thought of writing about college food. The all-you-can-eat bananas, late night cookies, and secret recipe in each dining hall have rearranged my diet. Living above V-Dub (the second largest dining hall), I was motivated enough to get up in the morning and have the first omelet and fresh bananas at 7:30. Yet that great habit ended as the winter approached and drained my morning energy away.

Anyhow, I still manage to have some quality food every other weekend. On campus, I usually have a hearty brunch with omelet/scrambled egg, bananas, and cupcakes/doughnuts at Ratty (the largest dining hall on campus). With so much protein and sugar per meal, I am halfway through the milestone of freshman fifteen.

A typical college meal (with a lot of vegetables)

My favorite place to eat/stay is Andrews (a.k.a.the best dining/residential hall on campus). I often have Pho for lunch and enjoy the dinner special.

Bibimbap Monday

I did not realize how good (American) Korean food is until I came to Brown. We also have an amazing food truck Mama Kim that delivers nice food at a reasonable price.

Mama Kim Half Pork Half Beef Rice Set

Mama Kim is my favorite food truck on Waterman Street. I usually order it first when I am in a hurry. It also relieves my stress with the juicy meat and crispy kimchi. (I have also heard good things about the Vietnamese Lotus Pepper and the Thai Ice Cream Roll.)

Den Den Hot Stone Bibimbap, Lunch with Erica

Den Den is one of the best Korean restaurant near campus. If you cannot stand Korean spice, they will serve the flavor that suits you. The portion is quite large but I still finished in one sitting. (Den Den is moving to Angell Street in late January 2017!)

Aside from Korean food, we also have Taiwanese steam buns at Andrews.

Steam buns and Pasta Thursday

Given the insane long line for Pasta, I always go straight to have the steam buns. Three buns with pork/chicken--if you do not know how to order, just say you want everything.

Sushi Friday

I used to buy the $8 sushi set from Blue Room/Science Library (convenient cafe), yet it is so expensive compared to the man-made Sushi Bento set at Andrews. I don't know why they usually serve dumplings with sushi, but all that matters is the tasty flavor.

Here is another great sushi place called Sakura. I have also heard good things about Haruki NONexpress (and more on my list).

Sakura Business Lunch, Lunch with Linda

These are some of the highlights at Brown. I am currently Yelping for nice food in Providence and beyond.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
