The popular Netflix 13 Reasons Why is taking the world by storm. Within weeks the show became Netflix’s most talked about show on social media, accumulating 3.5 million mentions on twitter within the first weeks.
With this level of attention comes memes.
One of the more popular memes that has emerged from 13 Reasons Why is the “Welcome to Your Tape” meme. This meme takes trivial things like not getting guacamole at Chipotle or cutting someone in line followed by the welcome to your tape line from the show.
These memes trivialize the serious subject matter of the show and the main character's suicide. These tapes are Hannah’s form of a suicide note and while not all people may agree with the way “13 Reasons Why” explored the issue of suicide, joking about a suicide note takes things too far.
Suicide is not a joke, nor is depression or sexual assault. These were all themes that the show explored and while some of the characters tapes may have been less shocking or seemingly minor compared to other events in Hannah’s life the show explores the little things that build up in a person’s life.
More often than not, we do not understand how large of an effect we have on people's lives until it is too late. Making memes that use a suicide note as a source of trivial amusement is seriously problematic and implies that people make their own lives over dramatic, is not always the case. No one takes their life on a whim, the issues someone faces are real and their reaction is not over the top. We are all entitled to feel how we wish and no one can tell us that our emotions do not matter or are not important.
While, dark themed memes have circled the internet for years, this one just seems a little extra cruel. We never know what people are going through and joking/trivializing a suicide note can have serious implications for people who are suffering through mental illness or have thoughts of suicide.
