Taking The SAD Out Of Singles Awareness Day

Singles Awareness Day is a day to be vain. Tell yourself you're beautiful and take your fine self to get a manicure.

Scrolling through Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and any other social media platform is always a headache on Valentine's Day. Either every other post is a declaration of love to a significant other and you coo in awe or are bitter about not having a "bae" on Valentine's Day. It is for the latter reason that I have decided to change Valentine's Day for the rest of my life into Singles Awareness Day.

Unlike Valentine's Day, Singles Awareness Day is a day dedicated to yourself. You do not need to worry about what everyone else and their "boo" are doing. It is on this day that you can enjoy your single life since most of the United States are right there with you. If you want to buy yourself chocolates and a heart shaped pizza, do it. If you want to go out and get lunch with your single friends and be single together, do it.

Singles Awareness Day is a day for us singles so we do not need to feel the sucker punch of being alone or partaking in a holiday that has been manipulated by consumers. Many singles feel left out of Valentine's Day, often staying in and watching romantic comedies all by themselves, a box of tissues in hand. Or, for the males out there, I imagine it is something along the lines of playing a lot of video games to preoccupy themselves. Scrolling through Yik Yak, like all bored college students do, I found that there were far too many bitter and miserable posts about being alone of Valentine's Day. We as singles should no feel upset for being single on a day like Valentine's Day; since the day is all about love, why not love yourself more than anyone else?

Singles Awareness Day is the day to be vain. Tell yourself you're beautiful and take your fine self to get a mani/pedi. It is a day to indulge. Buy yourself a box of chocolate, or two, or three. Remind yourself that you are more important than anyone else. Remind your friends that they are important to you. Go out to lunch with a bunch of singles! Spend Singles Awareness Day loving yourself and your friends and loving life!

There are plenty of those out in the world who make a mockery of Singles Awareness Day by calling it S.A.D. Singles Awareness Day is anything but sad! Who doesn't love buying your own heart shaped pizza and eating it all by yourself? Who doesn't love saving money to buy half-priced goodies on February 15? What's so sad about spending a day on yourself? We have a tendency to focus on loving others more than loving ourselves, so Singles Awareness Day is more important than any Valentine's Day ever! We all need to take some time to love ourselves, focus on ourselves, and be happy with who we are and what we have to offer.

So, all my lovely singles out there, whether you are single now or single next year when February 14 rolls around, remember that there is a bright side to Valentine's Day. I spent my Valentine's Day celebrating Singles Awareness Day with some of my best single friends and had the time of my life. Don't let commercial holidays get you down, sunshine! Remember that when it comes around again, a heart shaped pizza to yourself is much better than one you have to split with another person. Happy Singles Awareness Day, and make all your future single Valentine's Days ones about loving yourself, not being bitter!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
