Why I Take "Too Many" Pictures

My camera storage is always running low, but it’s full of jokes and smiles and good friends. How could I delete all of that?

Why I Take "Too Many" Pictures

As Ferris Bueller famously said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” He wasn’t the smartest when it came to school attendance, but the kid knows something about living.

In the blink of an eye my freshman year of college flew by and I figured out that life is short and it moves very fast. However, I’ve been able to capture tidbits of this whirlwind of a year through the tiny lens on my phone.

I’m happy to say that I have a plethora of pictures from this past year that I can look back on when I miss the carefree times of freshman year. My friends are always giving me crap about how I have my phone open on Snapchat, or the camera, taking pictures. However, I’ve always loved that, because of a picture, I have captured a moment that is now gone.

I take too many pictures, and you should too because the little moments you experience throughout your life are fleeting. The little girl you’ve been babysitting since she was one year old will soon be off to kindergarten. Your puppy won’t be a puppy in a few short months. The moment you are living in right now will never happen again.

It's been a habit of mine for years. I always seem to be living behind the lens of a camera, but it's amazing and the view from there is beautiful. I have captured birthday parties, baseball games, proms, sweet sixteens, and everything in between. From behind my lens I have watched my little sister grow from a little day old cherub to a little 8 year old devil and I've watched my little brother grow into his big head.

My family members roll their eyes. Adults say that our generation never looks away from our phones. People complain that at concerts everyone is just watching through the screen of their phones. Has anyone ever thought that maybe, just maybe, they are capturing moments that are important to them?

Forgive me for taking "too many" pictures. I'm trying my best to capture the moment that I am living in and the people sharing it with me. I’m going to take a video of that song in concert. I’m going to take a picture of my friends playing Kan Jam on the beach. And you are damn right I am going to take hundreds of pictures of my dog. Why? Because these are all things I love. These are things that I’ll miss one day when I’m not at that concert, or it’s the middle of winter, or I’m back at college and my dog is home.

Like I said, this year of college has flown by and I can only imagine how fast the next three will go. So, I will continue to fill my camera roll up to maximum capacity with memories I've made. While you're rolling your eyes at how many pictures I've taken, I'll be sending them to you so that you can have those memories too. You're welcome.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
