Lights, camera and action!
On February 28, 2016 all eyes were on the Oscar's. Some felt that Chris Rock should have back out, but he stood strong and stood his ground. I think he made some really valid points when addressing the controversy that plagued him since it was announced he's host of this year's Oscar's. Instead of avoiding the elephant in the room, he addressed it head on. Chris Rocks message was simply we have better things in the world to be concerned with, instead of the number of African Americans beings nominated.
The most powerful moment that took place in his opening monologue was when he asked "Why are we protesting…the big question is, why this Oscars?” he asked. According to Chris, in 1962 and 1963 we weren’t protesting the Oscars because, “we had real things to protest at the time. They were too busy being raped and lynched.” Now fast forward to 2015 and 2016, if we took the amount of time that was spent in protesting the Oscar's and Chris Rock being the host and turn that energy into real world issues. Let's talk about jobs in America, human trafficking, or making sure we vote the right candidate into office and then I believe America would be a better place. The topics of lynching and rape are very sensitive issues, but we also have to see the bigger issue here. Are we that superficial that we need to be glorified each time we do our jobs?
People we need to wake up because we will miss all the answer to all questions because we are focused on the wrong issues. It is a shame that we live in a world that is consumed with making wrong-right, and right-wrong. Because at the end of the day Mr. Rock was paid and really wasn't phased by what people said. He simply did his job.
