Tailgating season is the greatest time of year for just about everyone on campus. Whether or not you love football, tailgating is still for you.
The definition of the word tailgate, according to Merriam Webster's Dictionary is: "Tailgate (verb): to drive too closely behind another vehicle."
However, at MSU it is more like: Tailgate (verb): Waking up at the crack of dawn, wearing all MSU apparel; put stickers on your face, then drink and Darty until it is game time.
Tailgate season comes up pretty quickly once
we return in the fall, so here are some tips that could help make this football
season the greatest few months of your college experience.
How to successfully dress for a tailgate
1. Check the weather. If you do not look at the weather app on
your phone before choosing your attire on game day, you will most likely end up
freezing and soaking wet from rain because, let’s face it, it’s Michigan.
2. Make sure you have somewhere to put your keys and
your phone. You will be lost without these things, especially in your drunken
state.
3. Comfortable footwear is a necessity. You will be walking,
dancing, skipping and who knows what else throughout the day, so choose
wisely before wearing flip-flops.
4. Wear more rather than less. It will be colder than you
expect, so better safe than sorry.
5. Fanny packs or cross-body bags. If you are not going to the
actual football game, it is a very good call to bring something to put your
keys, phone, etc., in because you will misplace them at least once.
6. Sunglasses are a lifesaver. They make you appear sober,
since no one can see your eyes and if you went out the night before, which you
most likely did, they make waking up and drinking in the sun much more bearable.
Signs of a good tailgate
1. Music is typically too loud for that time of day. Or
any time of day, for that matter.
2. Frat boys hand out beers and other alcohol like it’s
their job.
3. Elevated surfaces. Who doesn’t love dancing on
elevated surfaces at 10 a.m.?
4. Green and White everywhere. And the occasional chanting of
“Go, Green” and “Go, White” when everyone gets hyped up.
5. Overall excitement and school spirit. No one likes a
tailgate where everyone is hungover and boring.
Dos and don’ts of tailgating
Do go all out when it
comes to school spirit. There is never too much green and white and if you think you are over the top, the boys at your tailgate are probably
wearing much crazier things than you.
Don’t get so drunk the
night before that you will not be up and ready for the tailgates the following
day. Whatever you were doing last night could not possibly be more fun than
tailgating.
Do go to every single
game if you have tickets. If you buy
football tickets you need to go to every game. Who doesn’t love watching the
Spartans kick ass?
Don’t over-estimate how
much alcohol you can drink. This is why people
end up missing the games.
Do live it up at every
single tailgate you go to. Whether you
have to get up at 7 a.m. or noon, it is all a part of the experience and you
will regret missing out. Put on your green and white and get ready for the time
of your life!
