If The Cast Of 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Were States
Just because they all work in Brooklyn, doesn't mean New York is the state for them.
29 October 2018
155
Fox
The 99th precinct is swarming with a wide variety of personalities. The mix of crazy and odd personalities is what makes "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" such a fan favorite show. After being canceled earlier this year the show was picked up by NBC just one day after canceled.
Although Fox didn't see the potential the show had left and we're gonna end it on such a huge cliffhanger, the fans of the show and the executives at NBC were able to revive our hope in broadcast sitcoms. In honor of the show's revival, I felt the need to write an article on it. Please enjoy my take on which state each character would be and let me know if you'd agree!
1. Jake Peralta - New York
New York is really the only place able to hold all of Peralta's personality and he gets to be right next to his best friend Boyle.
2. Captain Raymond Holt - Vermont
With his interesting sense of humor and monotonic personality, the quiet secludedness of Vermont is just what Captain Holt needs.
3. Amy Santiago - Connecticut
The closeness to NYC, but the more conservative suburban lifestyle is right up Amy's lane. Her badass detective skills fit with the city vibe, but her uptight goody-two-shoes pantsuit-wearing-self needs a more suburban home.
4. Terry Jeffords - Georgia
The sergeant was this badass cop until the birth of his daughters made him terrified to get hurt. The overprotectiveness mixed with his large physic and toughness creates the perfect mix of southern charm every Georgian dad has.
5. Rosa Diaz - Nevada
The mix of the warm desert getaway and Nevada being the home of sin city is the perfect mix for Rosa's badass and sensitive personality.
6. Charles Boyle - New Jersey
Boyle has always given me those soccer/Pinterest mom vibes which is why I could see him living out his real housewife dream in New Jersey.
7. Gina Linetti - (southern) California
Gina is always one many steps ahead the rest of the precinct when it comes to what's on trend. That's why she would fit in perfectly in the land of influencers.
8. Hitchcock - West Virginia
One of the few places it would be acceptable for Hitchcock to have his gun tattoo and run around shirtless at all time, just like he always wants to do.
9. Scully - Montana
You kind of forget about this state sometimes, and unfortunately the same goes for Scully when he isn't on for an episode or two.

The Fan's Guide To Watching CFB This Kickoff Weekend
How to efficiently spend your time and how to get the most enjoyment out of kickoff weekend.
30 August 2018
201
Labor day weekend is quickly coming upon us and that means it's college football season. No need to get stressed about coming up with an excuse to fake an illness on Monday, because Uncle Sam is looking out for us. But that doesn't mean your work is done.
The most important job this weekend isn't going to the store to get chips, spend quality time with your significant other, or to do that assignment that's due Monday at midnight. No, it's working on how to efficiently spend your time watching each game. If you're a fan of a certain team and want to just spend all of your time on that game fine. Everyone else will just have more fun than you.
Thursday: UConn vs. 21. UCF - ESPNU
In my eyes, it's always tradition to watch the first game of the year. And man what a "GREAT" game it's going to be. It's the civil conflict, the defending champion the University of Central Florida starting off their season looking to get the respect they deserve! They will kick off on Thursday against a school with rich tradition and competitive fire and that school is... UConn? Wow. In case you couldn't tell this game isn't going to be one for the ages. I meant what I said about always tuning into the first game of the weekend, but this could be a glance and dance kind of game. There are some interesting story lines laced throughout this "contest."
How will UCF start off after claiming a title? Will UConn's young core overachieve and be able to stay in the game? How many times will the announcers bring up the claimed championship? How many times will the announcers bring up UConn basketball? I could go on.
But if (when) this game gets out of hand I suggest that you turn it over to Northwestern and Purdue on ESPN. It starts about an hour after this one and that's about all the time it should deserve. The two schools also have a history of being at around the same level of talent so it should be a decent watch.
Prediction: UCF by all of the points — UConn's empty stadium.
That's right no score for this one.
Friday: 13. Stanford vs. SDSU - Fox
It's the first Friday "trap" game of the year... sort of. The Aztecs are coming off one of their best seasons in the history of the program. They won 10 games last year and had one of the best running backs in the country in Rashaad Penny. Although Penny has moved onto the NFL, junior running-back Juwan Washington is ready to take on the load. Their defense which was a working progress last year has more experience and they also have some stability at quarterback. But the big draw with this game is Bryce Love. The Heisman trophy favorite is returning for his senior season in pursuit of a championship ( I wouldn't hold my breath). He had a great year last year, but usually, when a high profile player returns for their senior season it turns out to be a little underwhelming. So will Love fall in line with the rest of the disappointing seniors? Or will he break the chain and have a repeat of his junior year? That's how you sell somebody on a Pac-12 game.
Speaking of the Pac-12 the game is going to be a late one. Sorry but if you haven't noticed football gets played on the west coast too, so you'll need to preoccupy yourself until then. I suggest tuning into Army at Duke on ESPNU because everyone should support the troops as they face America's greatest villain.
Predictions: Bryce Love has a good game.
Stanford 24 - SDSU 13
Early Saturday: 7. Oklahoma vs FAU - FS1
Easily the most intriguing game of the morning in terms of matchup. Lane Kiffin lead FAU to it's first bowl birth and win in 9 years. Now they are in the national spotlight and are cashing in that fame as they travel to Oklahoma to take on the Sooners. Another popular story to follow is the transition at quarterback for Oklahoma. It's Kyle Murray's team now and the big question will be how well he can fill Baker Mayfield's shoes. I expect a whole lot of offense in this one. There are two offensive guru's at work in Kiffin and head coach Lincoln Riley. Oklahoma doesn't get a whole lot better on defense from last year, so FAU should be able to hang around.
If you get bored of this one, or for some reason you don't have access to FS1 then I'd probably say watch Ohio St. vs Oregon State. Lead by Urb... Ryan Day, the Buckeyes have a new starting quarterback for the millionth time in a row (I know JT Barrett started the last two years, but you know what I mean). I'm not going to sugar coat it, I don't give the Beavers much of a shot. But the country would love to see them put up a fight.
Prediction: I'm not saying Oklahoma's on upset alert but... no, I can't do that
Oklahoma 34 - FAU 21
Mid Saturday: 6. Washington vs 9. Auburn - ABC
This is probably the most important game in the history of Washington football. Because the Pac-12 is so weak they need to win against Auburn and also run win the conference. The committee has already shown in its past selections that they do not respect the conference champion, they need to play big boy football outside of it. And that leads us to Auburn. They have much less pressure on them by default. The pressures of this game can be summed up by looking at this as if the two teams were working together on a school project. Washington is the kid who is always on edge and worried about staying on task because they don't want to disappoint their parents (the committee). Auburn is the kid who's just cool with getting a B and moving on with their life.
This game, just like most football games will ultimately come down to quarterback play but it will also be the running backs that will make the biggest difference. Jake Browning is returning for his senior season along with running back Myles Gaskin in the backfield. Auburn brings back Jarret Stidham but lost Kerryon Johnson to the NFL draft this past year. The game will come down to which team can slug it out in the trenches because both squads also have extremely talented defenses. If you can run the football that will take more pressure off of the quarterback.
Now, if Washington rolls over like they typically do in these games, the next best game is probably no 17. West Virginia vs. Tennessee. Jeremy Pruit is the man calling the shots for the volunteers, so maybe they have a new life (again don't hold your breath)? But if not, then you can just watch Will Grier sling it all over the field. That's always fun.
Prediction: I hate Auburn, but I'm also an educated man.
Auburn 31 - Washington 17
Saturday night: 1. Alabama vs Louisville - ABC
It isn't a question of if this might get out of hand, it's when will it get out of hand. The big draw for this game is obviously who will start at quarterback for the crimson tide. But a recent report from everyone's grumpy southern grandpa Paul Finebaum and he heard from a collection of the boosters that Tua is far and away the best option. You can take that with a grain of salt, but in my professional opinion he can run just as good as Jalen and he's obviously a better passer so I'd say it's a safe bet to make Tua the starter. Now if you just read that and are thinking "oh well I guess I've got no reason to watch" then your A not an Alabama fan or B an Auburn fan. If none of those fit your description then you should tune into the game, unless your one of those kids who likes to leave after the first quarter because it's "too hot in the upper bowl". Grow up we've all been there. You don't have to watch the whole thing, just until you feel sad for Louisville.
I feel as if I can go on a rant like this because of the state the Cardinals are in. They just lost Lamar Jackson to the NFL, so there really isn't much of an offensive identity. And they are going to have to defend an Alabama offense where they need to prepare for two quarterbacks and have their entire O-line returning. They just really don't have a shot in this one.
Prediction: Alabama could start the current Freddie Kitchens and win by 21 (use Google kids).
Alabama 31 - Louisville 10
But when this game gets REAL ugly or if you fit the descriptions I laid out, then you should probably go to this.
Saturday night: 12. Notre Dame vs 14. Michigan - NBC
This game probably has the highest stakes of them all. Both coaches badly need this to fend off the media. Both teams need to prove that they can put it all together this year. This will be the best game of the weekend. If you have no allegiance to any team, I'd get real excited for this one. Brian Kelly is coming off a career-saving season with the Fighting Irish and is trying to show the playoff committee that his team is ready to become part of the conversation. The way Kelly has scheduled his opponents this year, would all but guarantee one of the four spots if they were to finish 12-0.
Jim Harbaugh is also in the same boat as Kelly. He too is not only trying to prove to the committee that he can win a big game but also to his critics. Harbaugh gets knocked around a lot by the media because he can't win a big game. Although there have been many factors that contributed to those loses (bad spots by refs, poor officiating, a bad snap) some just can't look past the final score. And in this day in age, that's all it takes for someone to get fired.
To me, neither team has a really high powered offense. Notre Dame was always more of a ball control kind of team, and Michigan's new quarterback Shea Patterson is making his first start in more than a year. But both teams have monstrous defenses, the Wolverines in particular. But the difference in this game is not going to be the head coaches, but the coordinators. Specifically, Michigan's defensive coordinator Don Brown who I think is currently the best at what he does. For that reason alone I'm going to give them the edge.
Prediction: The Fighting Irish go down with a fight.
Michigan 17 - Notre Dame 14
Sunday 8. Miami vs 25 LSU
Sunday, fortunately, doesn't give you much of a choice in terms of what to watch (saves me some research too). So when the Tigers take on the hurricanes you better be content. And for the most part, you should be. It's a classic matchup of two programs who are trying to reach the heights of previous seasons. Although Miami is much closer to that LSU is still prone to putting up a decent fight (unless it's against Troy). That being said, with the U's ball hawks on defense, I see them giving new quarterback Joe Burrow a lot of trouble. He's barely played any college games and this isn't exactly an ease in a new player kind of game.
Prediction: The names of the programs will ultimately be more intriguing than the actual game
Miami 24: LSU 10 (I'm calling at least two interceptions)
Monday: 19. Florida State vs 20. Virginia Tech
Welp, we're finally here. The end of the weekend and we're all dreading the Tuesday that brings our normal miserable lives back. But hey, at least the week is one day shorter. Anyway, Florida State and Virginia Tech... can't say I'm super excited for this one. To me, FSU is criminally overrated this year. They just lost their head coach Jimbo Fisher to Texas A&M and replaced him with Willie Taggart who really didn't deserve the job. You also lose important pieces on defense like a guy named Derwin James (he's good). Then you add in the fact that Deondre Francois is coming off a major injury and also had to compete for his job. This all really isn't looking good for the Seminoles.
That being said Virginia Tech isn't really going to be the team that will exploit all of this. VT is super young on defense and has kicked two of their starting corners off of the team. They two have questions at quarterback with the young Josh Jackson who is looking to improve upon the rather average year he had in 2017. But the difference in this game is coaching. I really like Justin Fuentes and think that he is pretty underrated when people talk about the second tier of coaches.
Prediction: It should be a pretty close game, but expect an ugly one.
Virginia Tech 24 - Florida State 21
Happy college football watching and Labor Day!

10 Ways To Be A Healthy Hokie At Virginia Tech
These 10 Things will keep you from getting those freshman 15 at any point in you college career.
22 August 2018
305
We can't all be gym fanatics so this is for you if you want to stay fit in easy, everyday ways.
1. Walk
Walking is one of the easiest things to do to stay fit. Living in a dorm I would walk to class every day but once I move to an apartment I would either take the bus or drive every day, walking maybe a couple minutes from my car to class. At least one thing good came out of the new parking permits thanks to Virginia Tech you have the opportunity to walk a lot more! You can park all the way in McComas or Duck Pond lot and you will most definitely hit that 10,000 step mark walking all the way to the academic side.
2. Bike
If walking isn't your thing Virginia Tech has added this great new service where you can download and app and rent a bike for a certain amount of time. This service is a quick and easy way to get around campus and as an added bonus you also get to exercise!
3. Hike
Blacksburg has some amazing hiking trails less than 2 hours away. It's on the Hokie bucket list to try out all of the popular hiking spots around and this is also a great way for you to get some exercise in. Everyone has to go to the cascades at least one time while they are here at tech so I definitely recommend that one first because it's pretty easy. If you are looking some something a little harder, McAffe's Knob is a little more challenging and has some amazing views of the Valley. The trail for a little more experienced hikers would be Dragon's Tooth, after hiking that I was dog tired and got way over 10,000 steps plus some awesome rock climbing.
4. Swim
If land activities aren't your thing swimming is another great option. Both McComas and War have some amazing pools that you can jump right in and swim your laps. Swimming is a good form of cardio and very easy on the joints.
5. Workout at the Gym
McComas and War are the places to be when you want to gain some muscle or even loose a few pounds. There are classes you can take like yoga and spin class, or you can follow your own workout plan.
6. Get your protein
Protein is important to have a balanced diet. It keeps you full longer and can taste great. This does not always have to be meat, for all you vegetarians and vegans out there are always meat substitutes and other ways to get meat that are healthy for you. Nuts, tofu, milk, protein shakes and what-not are all great other options.
7. Eat your Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and Vegetables are also very important for a balanced diet. These can sometimes be hard to find when you are in the haze of all the other amazing food that we have here at Tech but believe me, it is there. You can always keep apples and bananas in your dorm and take them on the go or go to the grab and go at any dining area and there are options for you.
8. Choosing what you eat
Virginia Tech is notorious for their healthy food options. My freshman year I found it a little difficult to choose the healthier options when I knew that the dessert bar at D2 was all you can eat, however, if health is your priority then you have the choice to make whether you want to eat green beans or a slice of cake. D2 has both a vegetarian and vegan station, Owens has a salad bar and a fresh market, West End also has a salad bar, and Turner has a salad place and other great options. All the dining halls have great options to eat healthily and you should definitely take advantage of that.
9. Rest
Sleep seems like a bizarre component of being healthy but it is very important. When you workout getting a good nights sleep after helps your body recover and repair itself. Getting enough sleep every night helps you feel refreshed and ready to take on the next day.
10. Improvise
Not all of these tips will work for you, everyone is different and has a different way of staying healthy that works for them. There are so many different types of diets out there and you need to figure out what works best for you. A balanced diet and exercise are important for a healthy life but the way you go about doing these things is up to you.

7 Productive Places To Study At Virginia Tech That AREN'T The Library
From Deets to Hancock.
22 August 2018
891
Sometimes the library just won't do. Luckily, you have options:
1. Johnson Student Center
Johnson Student Center is great if you love smelling Subway all day long. It is great. There is a super comfy seating area on the second and first floor and if you ever need help with life just go to the Student Center and they can help you out!
2. New Classroom Building
NCB is the studying hub. There is seating everywhere, always access to an outlet and if you have a parking pass on Perry street it is super close to your car. The downsides though is that it's not close to much of anything else, for food you have to walk to Turner and if you take the bus it's also a pretty far walk. But if you want to get in some steps for the day this is the place for you.
3. Deets/DX backroom
There is a lot of seating options on the side areas of Deets and DX, not many people seem to go here and it's a pretty chill and trendy place. You can get your coffee fix, find a seat by an outlet, plug in and have a nice view out the window. Very relaxing.
4. McComass Hall
This one sounds a little odd but before a workout, if you have an assignment to do, this will be the perfect place to do it. They have tables leading up to the check-in desk and every time I have gone I have always been able to get a seat. Also, there are plugs next to the tables in case you need a charge up as well.
5. West End: Sun room
The perfect place to go when you want to grab a bite and you have some work to catch up on. The sunroom right next to the pasta and salad station is great and cheers you up since there's some great natural light. Keep in mind though that dinner rush is incredibly hectic so check it out during the off times which is basically anytime before 4.
6. Squires Student Center
Squires is another place where you can grab a bite and study at the same time. They have some great food options and three levels of seating options. When its raining try to grab a seat in the sunroom and look up it will feel like you're under a waterfall.
7. Hancock Hall
My all-time favorite place to study. Hancock is a nice calm and quiet environment to study or even take a snooze every now and then. It is one of the main engineering buildings and has some super comfy couches downstairs. There is also a cool rotunda area that not many people know about and it great if you want to be secluded.

15 Totally Hokie Dos And Don'ts For Your Freshman Year At Virginia Tech
Stick to these 15 things during your Freshman year and you'll be good to go.
23 July 2018

Hannah King
I learned a lot my freshman year and when I was thinking back about certain things that I could have done better or shouldn't have done at all, these 15 things came to mind. So, check them out and be sure to remember them when your first week of classes hits.
Oh, and if you're an incoming VT freshman, welcome Home.
Do go to your first class
Yes, you'll hear the daydreams of syllabus week but don't be that stupid freshman who thinks they can skip out on the first day of class. The professor will notice and you'll be doomed the rest of the school year.
Don't be afraid to skip a class
There comes a time that being overwhelmed is an understatement. Of course, I'm talking about finals week. So, if you need that extra time to study for another class that you are borderline managing a C-, then do it. Or if you just need the extra sleep, just do it.
Do hit up the gym
So, VT is really good about holding free fitness class weeks where you can try out a new class for free HIT THAT SHI UP! You might love it or you might hate it, either way, you're getting a study break and putting that college tuition to use.
Don't be afraid of Newman
So, Newman is the library and it can be pretty intimidating. I've gotten lost loads of times and if you're not careful, you can end up in Torg in a few seconds. But! Don't let that scare you off because it's a great place and it has so many resources!
Do find your study niche within the first month
Your thinking, "Well, that's what the library is for, right?" Sure, if you're that person and you can study in a setting where everyone is dying a slow and painful death, by all means, go for it. But if you are anything like me, you're going to want to find your own empty classroom or lecture hall to sit down with your books.
Heads Up: NCB, McBryde, and Torg are the hot spots
Don't be that girl in those shorts
I know it's hot in August when school starts but there is nothing worse than walking to class and seeing 10 million different butt cheeks. Seriously, you're going to class to learn. You're not going out on the town or over to a guys house for a booty call. Cover the cheeks up and save it for the weekend.
Do go to Gobblerfest
It's not just a freshman thing. Upperclassman will still go and beat you to all the free t-shirts and food. Do we care we already have them? Not. At. All. Besides, Gobblerfest is a great place to sign up for clubs and see what all VT has to offer.
DON'T CROWD TURNER
Yeah, we're glad you guys are the new Hokies and we do love you guys. But seriously, go to Owen's or Hokie Grill where you can get DD and Chick-fil-A. Please just leave us be at Turner's.
Do eat healthy
There are a lot of choices for food. Enjoy the pizza bar at D2 and the sports bar at West End. But don't forget to hit up the salad bar at Hokie Grill or the Smoothie Place at Turner's.
I know I told you not to go to Turner's but go at like a dead hour when no one is there.
Don't be afraid to introduce yourself
This goes for introducing yourself to the guy/girl you sit next to in that 500 person lecture hall and for introducing yourself to your professors.
It never hurts to have a friend in class, especially a huge one like that because let's face it, you're going to miss a class. So, if you make a friend, they will more than likely share their notes and you automatically have a study partner.
Your professors love you, honestly, they do. They might not seem like it during lecture but if you go see them during their office hours and introduce yourself, I promise that they won't seem so scary afterward.
Do go to the first football game
Actually, go to all of the football games. Just do it.
Don't go alone
For tailgating, this is crucial. Wait until you get on Center St. if you must but you'll thank me when you have your BFF with you when you're wading through the crowd of college kids.
Do wear sunscreen
Especially if you are planning on wearing those cute VT stickers on your face because if you don't, you'll be sporting a VT on your face for the next week.
Don't push your limit
Tailgating is supposed to be fun so have fun. But don't go buck crazy and blackout because there's nothing worse than waking up in the middle of someone's backyard and finding out that you not only missed the game but you have no idea where you are.
Do learn the correct chant
It's really not that hard. I'm sure they burned it into your brain at orientation but it's pretty embarrassing when you've had a few bears and all of the sudden you're screaming the wrong college chant.
