ASU Men's Hockey Is Bouncing Back After Losing Streak
After a three-game losing streak, the Sun Devils bounced back in Boston and look ahead for the remainder of the season.
The middle of January wasn't relatively good for the Sun Devil's Hockey Team. They started their road trip with a shell-shocking loss at Cornell, 1-6, and tried to catch up the following night, but lost 2-3. The following matchup wouldn't suffice either when taking on Boston University, and falling by a score of 2-4. Although, the following night was seen as a complete turnaround as Joey Daccord completely and uttering shutdown defensively with 28 saves for the night, which improves his save percentage to 93% and also makes him the #1 goaltender in the nation for minutes played, number of shutouts, and number of total saves this season.
On the offensive end, it was impressive as well with Johnny Walker getting his 20th and 21st goal of the season, increasing his lead as the top goal scorer in the nation, and Filips Buncis adding to the score sheet with his goal. Additionally, both Joey Daccord and Johnny Walker are both nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, which entails:
1. Strength of character, on and off the ice
2. Contribution to the integrity of the team and outstanding skills in all phases of the game
3. Scholastic achievement and sportsmanship
4. Compliance with all NCAA rules, including being a full-time student in an accredited college or university and completing 50 percent or more of the season
I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but this season has been extremely critical in the breakthrough of ASU becoming a legitimate hockey program. Win or lose, the determination and fight that these young men show in every bout has shown that they deserve the spotlight that they've worked so hard and so long for.
Despite a little hiccup in their season, they've continued to play with grit and ambition, which not only helps them propel forward for the remainder of the season but in seasons ahead. A special shoutout to Coach Greg Powers for his loyalty and dedication to the team all these years, and hopefully more years to come with his leadership and guidance for these young men in the sport of hockey and in life.
