4 Worst Syllabus Week Struggles

The main struggles every college student faces during the first week of class.

For most freshman, the first week of class (also known as syllabus or 'sylly' week) is the time to adjust to college life, learn your way around campus, and see how well you can handle yourself at school when you actually have class and responsibilities. For the upperclassmen, however, sylly week is just another excuse to blow off class and get drunk during the week. As a sophomore, I've seen the highs, lows, good and bad things syllabus week has to offer. Here are just a few of the things PSA students had to deal with this past week.

1. Getting adjusted to your roommate

For many people, they are living with a new person probably for the first time ever, and that can be difficult for some. Trying to learn your schedule along with your roommates is hard enough, but respecting their sleep and activity habits can be even worse, especially if you love to be up late doing your homework when your roommate is in bed by ten. Things can also get really messy, literally, especially when your roommate has no time to clean and is in the ROTC program and has tons of extra junk (I love you Dyvinne).

2. Classes

Normally, at least in my experience, during the first week of class, the teacher will hand out and talk about the syllabus and then you can leave. Other professors will go over the syllabus within the first 10 minutes of class and then jump right into lesson one. It's even worse when you have two three-hour classes packed into your schedule, then you know you're staying the whole time and actually learning something.

3. Books

For all Penn State classes, once you enroll in a course the professor will provide you with the book(s) that you will need for their class. Unfortunately, the books are not always required, so you have to (or should) wait until you get to the class to see if you even need the books that were listed. Nine times out of ten, that book you will spend $200 on will be used for an example and that's it. Not only do you have to wait to see if you even need these expensive books, so do the other 500 or so kids on campus, which means when you do finally order them, the line to the mail-room is crazy long. Tip: subscribe to Amazon Prime Student to get your books faster (its free just as long as you don't forget to cancel the membership before the trial runs out).

4. Parties

For those who choose to go out during sylly week, it can get pretty difficult to get the "party vibe" on, mainly because security and campus police are on top of every single thing that goes on for the first few weeks. Just imagine getting all dressed up and ready, walking up to the top of Pointe, and finding out all the parties you were planning on going to are either beat or got busted. Nothing is worse than being ready to go somewhere, with no where to really go, which is why kids go back to their apartments/houses/dorms and get drunk there.

If you are a Penn State student and reading this article, that means you survived your first (or another) syllabus week, so congrats on that! You avoided classes, ex-friends, old roommates, and even an underage all in the same week, you deserve a medal. The only bad thing is now it's time to buckle down and actually start doing work, unless you want to fail out and become a bum, it's your choice really. Just keep your friends close, study hard and try to survive off Port food and you'll be okay. Congrats to everyone at PSA and I hope everyone has a great year here in Toon Town.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
