The first week of every semester is syllabus week. At most schools, this insane week is referred to as "sylly week." It includes drinking, parties, and typically not learning in any class. After experiencing my first syllabus week, I decided to compile the typical things I heard throughout the day.
1. "This is not the classroom I requested. I don't like this room at all." -Professors
I heard this not once, but TWICE this week. It is a classroom, not a house. You spend an hour or two in this classroom every day or so, and so do we. We, the students, aren't here to listen to you complain. Tell us your syllabus and let us leave.
2. "I'm not going to go over my syllabus today because I bet you're all tired of hearing your professors talk about syllabi. We'll just discuss it at the next class." -Professors
Or you can talk about your syllabus now because it is syllabus week and no one is mentally prepared to learn right now.
3. "Attendance for this lecture is not mandatory." -Professors
*Everyone silently cheers*
4. "My syllabus is online so since you've already read it, we are just going to start taking notes today." -Professors
And we know your syllabus in online how? Did you email us? No? Alright thanks.
5. "I'm too hungover to pay attention." -Students
Drinking is the biggest occurrence during syllabus week so...do you expect anything else to be said?
6. "You already have homework?" -Students![]()
Indeed I do. I'm just going to go do homework now. Have fun going out bye!!!!!
7."The party I was at last night got busted. I already have a ticket and it is my fourth night here." -Students
I APPLAUD YOU. I truly do. I guess you learn the hard way not to be ignorant during syllabus week.
Well, this about sums it up. Syllabus week is something unlike anything else and I wish everyone all the luck surviving.
