God, I love indie films.
"Swiss Army Man" was a movie I was actually very much looking forward to. It looked very weird and actually pretty interesting, in which I love those kind of movies. Plot? Paul Dano is stranded on an island and finds a corpse whose played by Daniel Radcliffe, dead Daniel Radcliffe farts and communicates with Paul Dano and helps get him back home.
I really want to see the opinion of this movie from a die hard "Harry Potter" fan.
News flash! Harry Potter farts too! Farting is OK people, Harry Potter does it!
Walking in to "Swiss Army Man" I was so excited, walking out, I loved it so much. Yes, this movie is strange, but it’s strange for a reason, deep down, this movie is way more than just fart jokes. This movie is honestly a very sad, yet beautiful look at friendship and I even saw it as being a friend with someone who may be less intelligent than yourself. Daniel Radcliffe’s character is a person who clearly doesn’t know any better and just says what’s on his mind no matter how inappropriate, Paul Dano in this movie is someone who tries to show Daniel Radcliffe what’s expected in reality and what’s appropriate to say and inappropriate to say. If that’s not a hidden meaning of being a friend with someone whose not there mentally, then I don’t know what is.
I guess it’s safe to say Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe have terrific chemistry with each other you believe that they’re the best of friends even though one is more intelligent than the other. The more you see them communicate with each other, the more you see Paul Dano show Daniel Radcliffe what’s expected in reality is truly beautiful. There’s a scene in which Paul Dano demonstrates to Daniel Radcliffe what a bus ride is like and what seeing a beautiful girl is like. Seeing that was just very beautiful and the friendship in that scene felt very realistic. That was easily the best scene in the movie because that was when you connect with the characters the most.
Sure, someone may judge the fart jokes and the penis jokes. Someone may say this movie is “immature” and “inappropriate” which I can totally see why someone would think that, there are a lot of questionable lines of dialogue (which OK, honestly are more hilarious than questionable), but everything there I thought served a purpose. Those “immature” jokes serve a purpose to the film and it’s not a film that just holds your hand throughout the entire thing and explains everything to you. You have to figure this out for yourself and come up with your own interpretation (especially at the end which was just so weird yet, very thought provoking).
Overall, "Swiss Army Man" is definitely one of the best films I’ve seen all year. It’s a very thought provoking, extremely funny, pretty depressing and beautiful look on friendship and just being a mentor for someone who might not be all there. Yes, it’s a weird movie and some people might laugh at me for calling this movie beautiful, but for me that’s what it was. I recommend this movie to everybody.
