S'Winter, Stay Forever

Sunny and 75 in January

The cold is awful. The only good thing about it and winter is sweater weather and boots. But once you get past the hype of changing your wardrobe, most people just count the days until you can walk outside without your teeth chattering. By the grace of God, January has decided to flip flop over to the summer schedule, and no one is complaining. S'Winter, stay as long as you’d like

1. Enos

There is nothing better than running back to your dorm, grabbing that stuffed bag, and booking it to the best shady trees on campus. You can’t believe there’s a day nice enough for busting it out. It means a nice hammock-y nap, enjoying the sunshine, and feeling like summer is that much closer for all those outdoorsy enthusiasts.

2. Chaco’s

Unless one is a firm believer in Socos (Chaco’s with socks), then you have to stop wearing your favorite shoe to keep Jack Frost from taking your toes by October or November. With this lovely warm weather, Chaco’s can reemerge from the depths of your closet for a mid-winter appearance.

3. Nike Shorts

If you’re anything like me, your Nike track shorts went back into the drawer for the next six months, save for the gym. It's actually warm enough to pull those back out. So cue them disappearing underneath your oversized t-shirt, because it feels like summer outside.

4. Your Fav On-Campus Eatery

I’m not sure about every college campus out there, but mine is stock full of different restaurants that have little balconies or patios so you can enjoy the sunshine while you eat. Most of those places have been locked up and shut down because the bitter cold and eating outside just don’t really work. Take advantage of the unusual warmth and go eat outside with your buds before the next cold snap.

5. Ah, The Outdoors.

There are people (like me) who live in their dorms until the winter storm passes and only brave the cold because we have to attend class and get food. Now with the sun shining, those people are coming out of hibernation. People you thought you wouldn’t see till March or April are peeping out their shells like turtles. They’re on blankets spread on the green space, taking over the sand volleyball courts, or having a nice bike ride around campus, because heat

Personally, I hope this warm weather lasts aaallll the way till the summer months. Unfortunately, I don’t think it will because, you know, nature. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy S'Winter while it lasts. Don’t let the frost bite bite, and grab your friends for a picnic or hike because this heat won’t stay forever.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
