I don’t know what happened to me, but when I was younger I wasn’t the biggest sweets-eater, but now…I unfortunately am. I didn’t really care for cookies, or cake or even chocolate for that matter (I know, how ridiculous), but the sight of anything oozing chocolate literally makes my entire body warm and the smell of fresh baked buttery cookies makes me want to cuddle up next to my dog.
Because I am the biggest foodie in the world and am currently craving a big bowl of mint chocolate chip ice cream, I decided to compile a list of the best dessert places all over New York. Wahoo!
1. Levain Bakery
You’ve probably seen it on the ‘gram or on Business Insider, so this may not come as a surprise, but Levain Bakery in Manhattan is notoriously known for their warm GINORMOUS cookies. Their six-ounce (yes that’s right.. SIX OUNCE), walnut chocolate chip cookie has customers waiting in line every day. They're a whopping $4 a cookie, but it's all worth it. They're crispy and a tad crunchy on the outside, but SUPER gooey and warm on the inside. Holy cookie.
2. Popbar
I have passed by this place many times while going to my aunties office in NYC, and finally went in (not caring that I was about to be late for a lil' lunch date because this pit stop seemed worth it), and grabbed myself a pop. The display of ice pops ALONE dragged me in, but then once I went inside, I was hooked on the colors and the different flavors of pops offered. They’re fancy, all natural and totally trendy. In the summer, there is nothing more satisfying than taking a lick from a portable funky indulgent like this one; you can choose from a yogurt base, a gelato base, or a fruit base. I got the Dulce De Leche dipped in caramel pop corn and it was absolutely delish. If you look on the website and check out the menu, you will see at least 50 different pops to choose from. It's super entertaining.
3. Magnolia Bakery
I’ve been to Magnolia Bakery a bunch of times because I simply cannot resist a good buttercream frosted cupcake. But apparently, what I thought was "all the rage," at Magnolia's is not-- I have yet to try what everyone is raving about: their banana bread pudding. I am not the biggest fan of bananas, but supposedly that will all change once I take a spoon full of this banana pudding, according to many food bloggers and reliable foodie friends of mine. The bananas are fresh and ripe to perfection, folded together with rich custard and buttery cake. It sounds yummy, so I gotta' give it a go!
4. Doughnut Plant
These peeps in NYC have re-invented donuts to an extreme. Not only do they have the classic wheel fried dough we all know and love, they also have filled doughnuts, doughseeds, cake doughnuts, and doughpods (a savory doughnut sandwich-hybrid that comes in an avocado toast flavor and a samosa flavor). Personally, I love the blackout flavor which is a chocolate cake doughnut dipped in chocolate, filled with chocolate pudding and sprinkled with chocolate crumbs. For you non-chocolatey lovers out there (whoever you are, don’t talk to me), there are other options on the menu, like the whiteout doughnut which features an exact opposite of the doughnut I just beautifully described to you.
5. Ample Hills Creamery

If you’re anything like me and appreciate a weird ice cream concoction, this place is for you! Ample Hill's, in NYC, whips up ice cream flavors that range from Snap Mallow Pop (marshmallow flavored ice cream with rice-crispy treat chunks), to Baby I was churned this way (hazelnut flavored ice cream with rainbow-chocolate covered sunflower seeds). They're weird, funky and utterly delicious. Their most popular flavor, though, is called ooey gooey butter cake which tastes exactly like what the title is. OH. EM. GEE.
6. Breads Bakery
Being a girl who’s Jewish and had an authentic babka experience in Israel, I have to say the chocolate babka from Breads Bakery is hands down a classic dessert that must be added to the list. Their chocolate babka whipped up in NYC is probably the butteriest, messiest gooiest thing I have ever eaten with my fingers. Each layer is coated with chocolate and smothered with butter while also having the consistency of a croissant. It is truly scrumptious and can easily be devoured within seconds…trust me....I've done it before.
7. Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pie
I love all things tart and acidic. I can eat an entire lemon without twitching. (Someone dare me!) I do love me some good authentic key lime pie, but I don’t like it too sweet or too sour; I like it just in the middle! Steve's Authentic Key Lime pie located in Brooklyn, NY and is famously known for their “authentic key lime pies,” but they are also known for their fun inventive creation called the “The Swindle,” which is basically a frozen, chocolate dipped key lime pie on a stick! I am currently crying—that sounds so beyond tasty.
8. Chikalicious
The Bun Chica Bun made at Chikalicious, located in the East Village of NYC, is a
large puff with a crunchy coating on the outside, filled with a small pool of
cinnamon butter that coats the bottom. It’s crackling, crunchy, and oozy all
at the same time. It's so much fun to say, "Bun Chica Bun", but even more fun to eat! Mmmm. Now, I want a warm cup of a tea, a Bun Chica Bun and someone to snug with (is that weird to say? I don't know).
9. Spot Dessert Bar
I’ve been to St.Marks place to grab a falafel and maybe a secret piercing if I was feeling frisky (sorry mom), but I have no clue why I never noticed the iconic Spot Dessert Bar. Reading the menu is making me hate myself for never checking this place out—they have desserts that range from layers of berries, soft cheesecake, meringue, raspberry sorbet, and black rose milk tea all nestled into a flower pot, called the Harvest (pictured above), while they also have green tea tiramisu which is a twist on the classic tiramisu (instead of cake being soaked in coffee it is soaked in green tea). I’m currently making a reservation to get myself a seat at this place just so I can try these delectable treats. Wowie.
10. Dominique Ansel Bakery
Before the cronut, or the cookie shot became a success that had people waiting online at Domique Ansel Bakery NYC at 6 a.m., the classic french pastry kouign amann was a big hit at this dessert destination. The kouign amann is a buttery croissant like dough that is baked with sugar in special steel rings; it has the effect of a croissant but it is more dense and rich. Is that even possible for a croissant to get richer? I gotta' go find out myself, I guess!
11. Momofuka Milk Bar
Inspired by the dregs found at the bottom of your cereal bowl, Momofuka milk bar decided to make $4 soft serve based off of that sugary-milky taste we all love! The taste of the ice cream will bring you right back to those times where you had a bowl of Fruity Pebbles, Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies etc...or the times you wished you had a bowl of that sugar processed junk because your mama and dada wouldn't let you have that garbage. Momofuka, NYC, is quite the experience--starting from the flavor of the ice cream, to the toppings (all different types of cereals, sprinkles, etc). At this whimsical joint, they also sell pies, cookies and cakes while their menu is changing constantly. I have yet to try this incredibly unique creation, but I intend to do so soon.
If I haven't made you hungry, or tempted to eat an entire pie then I have not done my job. I am currently drinking a cup of cold milk with a batch of warm chocolate chip cookies by my side to be dipped and devoured. Be jealous.
