I've always favored donuts more than bagels, but I've always favored bacon more than both. Luckily, at Sweet & Savory Donuts and Bagel they serve all three and more.
Sweet & Savory's staff is always warm and welcoming. I'm greeted with a friendly smile every time I enter. The interior of the restaurant is colorful and has a home-like essence that encourages staying a while versus of rushing out at the earliest moment.
Upon entering, my attention is drawn to the donuts perched behind the glass directly ahead; rows of them separated onto trays by flavor. So many flavors, some with sprinkles, some without. Some with icing on top, some plain. After moments of my eyes bouncing from donut to donut, I finally picked what has become my "usual:" the maple bacon donut.
The maple bacon is pretty self-explanatory. It's a maple-flavored donut with bacon on top, and it's great. Although I found my favorite early, I've still tried other donuts upon revisiting. All the flavors I've tried have been tasty, but I love sweets. I always have.
I remember being a kid and hearing my dad complain about things being "too sweet;" a sensation I couldn't fathom at that time. I feel like he would say the same about these donuts, but my sweet tooth won't allow me to agree.
The donuts are really sugary but they're good. I just have to limit myself to one at a time," said local resident John Mauger.
My other go-to item from the menu is the Barbecue Chicken & Cheese bagel sandwich, hold the cheese on an onion bagel, a flavor I had yet to try prior to visiting Sweet & Savory. This sandwich consists of grilled chicken breasts, bacon, crispy fried onions and barbecue sauce.
I look forward to those bites containing every ingredient, with enough barbecue sauce to ooze out of the side. My favorite part, the crispy onion adds the right crunch to each bite. As I'm eating the sandwich, some bites are dry, but that could be fixed with a simple request for extra barbecue sauce. It could also be a result of me opting out of cheese.
At other restaurants, I often find that bacon is undercooked when ordered on a sandwich and I end up taking it off; that was not the case here. I've also had the same sandwich on a jalapeño bagel, but I prefer onion when it's available. The donut and bagel flavor options have varied upon my visits but I have yet to taste one I didn't like.
