We all know that recruitment season is upon us. You have seen the tweets, the snapchat stories, the ironic Harambe memes and listen, I understand it can be a little overwhelming. Which is exactly why I wanted to break the monotony, flip the script for a bit and change the story about what recruitment is really like. It's not all fun, games and cute Instagram posts, ya know? So without further ado, I present to you, what may quite possibly be the most accurate representation of recruitment to this day (a completely non-biased judgement, of course):
Surviving Recruitment As Told By Ugly Renaissance Babies. Enjoy.
1. When you meet your rho leader for the first time and ~soak~ in her knowledge.
This is your first chance to make a good impression and get all those questions you have been dying to ask answered. Like, what to wear? What are these organizations expecting of me? What is their emphasis on scholarship and leadership roles in the community? Do I actually have to wear heels every round, or are these other girls just overachieving?
2. When you walk into your first room and they compliment your outfit.
All those Facetimes with your mom and friends over the perfect outfit finally paid off. You can apologize to your roommate later about wrecking the room with the clothes tornado you caused. At the end of the day you made it fam, and you looked damn good doing it.
3. When you are desperately trying to make a connection in your favorite room.
Is this too much eye-contact? Not enough eye-contact? Does she think I'm witty and approachable? Seriously, I haven't blinked in a solid three and a half minutes, but neither has she so I must be interesting, right?
4. When you're laying in bed reflecting on all the small talk.
To be honest, I'm not sure if I related more to the baby or the cow, because they both look pretty equally done. Remember, you don't have to click with every group of girls you meet! Really, you aren't supposed to. I promise the conversations will get better as you get closer with the women, but until then, wallow in the face of having to explain your major another 162 times.
5. When you tell a joke that only you thought was funny.
Oh. My. God. It's. Happening.
You're standing there laughing your ass off, and she is just looking at you with this mix of apprehension and complete and utter discomfort. Did she not get it? Did she not like it? Did you tell it wrong? The world may never know, but just keep laughing kid and enjoy it while you can, because you are about to be faced with at least 45 seconds of awkward silence and explanation after this is done.
6. When you get dropped from a group you thought you made a connection with.
You knew that joke didn't go over well... WHY DIDN'T SHE LOVE ME?
In all seriousness, sometimes it just doesn't work out. Not everyone is going to click with you, and you don't want to force yourself into a sisterhood if it's not where you are meant to be! All you can do is dry those tears, realize that it wasn't meant to be and move forward knowing that you are one step closer to finding the home you were meant to have.
7. When you find a sister that you low key fall in love with during your conversation.
This is the moment that you have been waiting for. Your soulmate has arrived. Descending from the heavens and rescuing you from the pits of small talk and despair, this is the girl you have been waiting for. Her weird matches your weird. She laughs at your obscure reference to "Parks and Recreation," and she doesn't mind that you are way too enthusiastically talking with your hands about queso. She just gets you.
8. When you practice "throwing what you know" in your mirror for all the Insta Pics your about to take.
Seriously, how do their hands do that? Like I think they all most be double jointed or something because this is just ridiculous. Hopefully they have a seminar or something about this later.
9. When you are leaving the room on Preference Night, but you don't want to go.
But...this is my home, right? We sang the songs together, and I confessed to you my secret love of Wham! and my ability to quote every single line of Die Hard from title screen to credits. This is what love is, don't make me go.
10. When you run into your new sisters' arms on Bid Day.
This is the moment, right here. One you will remember for the rest of your life. This feeling of coming home for the first time, of pure unrestrained joy at being a part of something so wonderful and bigger than yourself. Of knowing that you are now apart of a sisterhood that will support you, love you, and carry you through every moment of your life. This is the moment that made everything else worth it.
