In case you didn’t know, there’s a major hurricane coming toward the state of Florida. People who are native to Florida may already know how to prepare (not to mention the appropriate level of freaking out to do), but as a New Yorker who moved to Orlando in the middle of the panic surrounding Hurricane Irma. This means that on top of moving into my apartment, and meeting my new roommates, I have to prepare for the worst. Here’s how I’m preparing.

1. Panic because everyone back home is overreacting.

I’m fine. I’m living in Disney housing. They’re going to make sure we’re safe. After all, “Safe D begins with me!”

2. Make a list of things you definitely need.

Yes, water and food are important. It’s also important to be entertained.

3. Panic because the store is absolute chaos.

I don’t even know this store. Why are there so many people? I just want stuff for peanut butter and jelly, and maybe some water.

4. Get creative because the store is sold out of water.

Because you aren't buying traditional water bottles. Or even jugs for that matter.

5. Give up on water, and buy wine instead.

Hurricane prep is stressful okay.

6. Make sure all of your cars have gas.

Try to avoid filling up at the one that for some reason is charging twice as much as all the other gas stations.

7. Try to lighten the mood with hurricane memes.

Pro-tip: Make sure to avoid the panicking friends back home.

8. Fail, panic again because of everyone’s posts that aren’t even going to experience the storm.

Seriously. Stop. If it’s not helpful, don’t share it. Otherwise, you are doing the opposite of helping.

9. Figure out what you can put in a waterproof bag, and what can’t.

If your apartment’s gonna flood, make sure you at least still have some of your stuff.

10. Make plans with your roommates to pass the time.

Movie marathon anyone?

11. Keep your phone charged all the time.

Even if your complex is nice and has underground wires like mine, there’s still a possibility that you’ll lose power, and your family will definitely want to check in on you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
