Going on a vacation is tremendous fun, but sometimes you don't know what you need till you are actually there. For me, I was able to experience one of the most historic cities in the country: New Orleans. However, I found that maybe I hadn't prepared enough.
1. Save money and carry cash.
If you plan on going to the Big Easy, you are going to need a sufficient amount of money. I saved half of a paycheck for this trip because we planned on enjoying the cuisine of the area. You will need at least $100, if not more depending on the length of your stay. Also, carry cash with you because some places don't take cards.
2. Get sleep.
You will do so much walking in the city, so you will definitely need sleep, especially if you plan on driving down. The city is vast and there will be so much you want to see and do. Try to be back where you are staying by 11:00, especially if you have early morning plans.
4. Have a power bank.
This is vital if you plan on taking pictures. You cannot guarantee that the restaurant will have an available plug in for you to charge your phone.
5. Buy a hand-fan.
It sounds so silly, but this is the best purchase with two dollars you will ever make. Take yourself to the French Market and buy one as soon as they open. It will keep you cool while you are exploring the city.
6. Bring a change of shoes.
You never know what will happen, but as I have mentioned previously, you will be walking miles. Sometimes shoes can cause blisters, so bring some sturdy flip-flops or flats to help ease some of the pain. Sometimes they may come in handy if your friend starts getting blisters too.
7. Always carry an umbrella.
If you go during the summer, this will be vital. They can be used for either shade or rain protection, sometimes in one day. Be sure to get one that fits in a small bag or purse. You do not want to carry a large one all day long.
8. Don’t talk to strangers.
I cannot stress this enough. Do not talk to people you do not know and trust because people will hustle you. If someone you do not want to engage with speaks to you, ignore them and walk on. No one provides services for free down there, not even pictures.
9. Take public transportation.
I was lucky enough to stay with the family of a friend of mine who lived near the Algiers Ferry. For two dollars (one way), you can cross the Mississippi and avoid parking in the French Quarter. In addition, if you have the chance, ride the St. Charles streetcar to the Garden District. Taking a streetcar is cheaper than a taxi and 10 times better than walking. For three dollars a day, you can obtain an all-day pass and ride every streetcar.
10. Take a tour.
Self-tours can be fun, but having guide is good too. Plus, to gain entry into the St. Louis #1 cemetery, you will need a licensed tour guide to enter. I highly suggest going through the Free Tours By Foot company because they offer “pay as you want” tours, with the exception of the St. Louis #1 where you have to pay two dollars. Every part of New Orleans is rich with history and a self-guided tour might not do you any justice.
11. Have fun.
You are down here for a reason. Have fun, drink a little and be safe. I highly recommend the Hand Grenades and Hurricanes if you are of age to drink.
