It’s here, friends: finals week. When the exams we take could determine whether we pass or fail, the pressure is on and we’re feeling it. Finals week is easily the worst week of the semester, because while there are only ‘x’ number of exams between us and a month spent at home for the holidays, the work going into those exams can seem unbearable.
First off, you have to sleep. While pulling an all-nighter may seem like the only way to succeed, depriving yourself of sleep is not the answer. Plan to give yourself at least two to three hours to rest, compose yourself, and take a break from the books. You will perform better with a good night’s sleep, so use your time wisely to avoid the dreaded all-nighter.
As we all know, studying is exhausting and sitting in a desk for hours on end is not enjoyable. Every 45 minutes to an hour, give yourself a breather by making a quick Aspen run or taking a stroll to visit friends around the library. It’s good to give your brain a break, and will make studying easier when it’s split up. Step away from the information, spend some time to yourself, and relax for a little bit before hitting the books once more.
Another crucial way to be successful during finals week is to eat healthy. Give yourself good brain food and reach for an apple instead of a candy bar. Plus, eating healthy will keep you fuller for longer, which means the distraction of your stomach growling won’t happen as often. It’s important to stay hydrated as well, so put down the coffee for a bit and grab a water instead.
Most importantly, remember that grades do not define you. While it may seem like the world will end if you end up with a C in whatever class, know that you will get past it. Everyone has a tough class or a bad semester, so remember that you aren’t alone and that while it may feel like it at first, you didn’t fail. Be proud of all the hard work you put into getting your grade, and know that there will be more classes and more opportunities.
Take on finals week with a positive attitude and spend as much time as possible learning, and keep in mind the incredible opportunity we have to even take finals and be in college. Amidst the horror of finals, stay thankful and stay hopeful for the next month you get to enjoy.
