Everyone has a right to pursue happiness, and health. If a child was put into a situation, the parent or parents would try everything in their power to ensure the safety and health of that child. What if that child was a child of an immigrant, would they treat the situation any different?
Immigrants come to America for opportunity. With the stereotypes surrounding immigrants, the majority are considered bad for the economy and the population. That could not be further from the truth. The bad few doesn't showcase all immigrants. I am going to be a part of an immigrant family, and some of my coworkers are either children of immigrants or are immigrants themselves. My fiancé's family had a tough start, but they were lucky to have someone to help them when they got to American soil. This is not the same for every family and there is a need for more resources for those families.
My fiancé's family has full rights as citizens. From the outside, they look like a typical American family. They just have the added privilege of being citizens of Brasil as well. They are taxpayers like every naturalized citizen. They came to America to pursue more opportunity considering the economy in Brasil. My fiancé had better educational opportunities on American soil than he had in Brasil. The language barrier was a problem in the beginning, but they quickly learned. My fiancé, whose English wasn’t good in the beginning, managed to communicate with his friends in a special way. It shows that children can communicate on a different level and that playing together is a universal language. With his brother not being in school when they got here, his little brother was able to learn English more quickly then my fiancé. They were put in the best schools in the area that they moved too, and it was shown that my fiancé educational needs were met over here and he was able to succeed.
The U.S Immigration Center, states that it take 6 months to a couple of years to get American citizenship. It took my fiancé’s family a year to get citizenship. That is not the case at all for some families. My friend’s family had to work on citizenship for 22 years. These people want a better life for their family. The stereotypes surrounding immigrants are wrong. To say that some of these people who are fighting for citizenship want a free ride, that is the farthest from the truth. They have to pay their original countries taxes, so they tend to know how it works on American Soil. Not to mention that some of the global economies are so poor that they can’t afford to feed their own people.
The negative side of immigrants are seen in the few rather than the majority. My fiancé’s family doesn’t like those who are here for the “free ride” and they migrated themselves. The cases on drug smuggling are few compared to those who cross the border themselves. Would you rather a drug smuggler or someone just walking across the border? Tell me, which one would you rather run into? With jobs, I have not met one stranger that wants to be a house keeper or in construction.
There are some families that aren't successful during their first few months on American soil because they don't know the language well or other situations. These people wanting citizenship want to be part of the "American Dream," and are willing to be part of the good, the bad, and the ugly. Yes, there are taxes to be paid, but they are willing to be part of that so they can escape their current situation. The majority of the population has roots in other places, because their families escaped for better opportunity.
Why can't we lend a helping hand to the future? There is a future, because behind every child, there is creativity to create new and better solutions. The scholarships for children of immigrants is what is helping these families. When you go to the doctor there are resources to help you when you are sick. Why can't these families have resources to help them settle in.
Everyone has the right to pursue happiness, and health. If a parent has a sick child, and where they live doesn't have the treatment, they have every natural right to search for a better opportunity. If the child needs prolonged treatment, they have every right to stay in that place. The stereotypes surrounding immigrants are ridiculous. Not every immigrant is a drug dealer or an evil goblin that is out to steal all of the jobs. They are people, like you and I, that are looking for better opportunities.
