So, the other day I decided to watch a movie before I went to sleep. I wanted to watch something I haven’t watched in a while and I found the movie "Super 8" in my BluRay shelf. I thought, “Wow, it’s been years since I've seen this; let's see if it holds up.” After five years since this movie's release, not only did it hold up, but I found myself in tears of joy afterwards. I think "Super 8" is one of the most underrated movies we have had in a very long time. Probably ever.
First off, when this movie was released back in 2011, it was wildly praised by everyone, only to get wildly shit on a year later. Yeah, everyone stopped talking about this movie for a long while now, which is understandable, but the people that did, didn’t have very good things to say about it….
So this will be a short list of why I think everyone should watch Super 8:
Let's face it. Abrams is a now a revelation to mainstream film makers. He’s usually known for directing films for franchises like "Star Trek," "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and "Mission Impossible 3." "Super 8" is his only original film and I think it’s by far his best. He really knows how to build suspense more and more; he does this by not showing the monster until the end of the film. Many have complained about this, but I think it's ingenious. It’s like what "Jaws" did, it didn’t show the shark until the end. This was done to build up the monster more and more, so when we actually see the monster it’s satisfying as all hell. Also, the lens flares are strong with this one.
Spielberg was a producer for "Super 8" and it shows. This movie pays homage to so many of his old 80s movies like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "E.T." I wont spend much time talking about his involvement, but what I will say (without spoiling anything) is it will make you feel like a kid again.
The children in this movie are some of the best child actors I have seen in a very long time. They are so interesting to watch and they’re actually smart! Every single child here is developed and they’re all very funny. You feel like they’re all very good friends because you’ve had their conversations before, and the relationship between the main boy and the girl is so sweet. It legitimately feels like young love <3
This scene will explain it for me
This is a movie that just does not piss around. Character development begins right when the movie starts and the main conflict starts in the first 10 or so minutes. After the shit hits the fan, it is constantly moving and constantly wanting to keep your attention. This is one of the fastest paced movies I have ever seen, but honestly I wanted more of it in the end. This is a 1 hour and 50 minute movie that feels like 45 minutes. That’s because it’s giving us more and more, and building up and building up and building up all to a great ending.
I could go on forever about "Super 8" and how much I love it. Please, watch "Super 8" if you can; it is such an underrated movie.
