This summer I am spending 11 wonderful weeks working at the overnight camp I attended as a camper, and one of the best parts is that we aren't allowed to use any electronics.
Many people my age would not like this, but I love it. I don't have to worry about texting, calling, Facebook-ing, anything. Instead, I get to spend time mentoring young girls and bonding with friends. I have found that instead of missing my phone during the day, it feels weird to have it at night. The camp offers two computers for staff use, but with 44 on staff and most of them being on international time, the computers is sparse.
For some, being out of touch is frustrating, but I love it. The feeling that I have to always be talking to someone or that I have to share every semi-descent picture I take with a friend goes away. Knowing that I only have 45 minutes every day to talk to my family (unless it's my off night, but normally I spend that eating or sleeping) has made me realize what parts of my day are most important, and how much I value my family.
Even on our off nights, my friends and I have found that we don't text at the restaurant, and end up talking most the night. We use actual cameras instead of cell phones (Gasp!), and get to know each other better.
This summer, I encourage you to step away from the laptop and let your cell phone die. Write a letter to your friend, not a text. Try to enjoy the benefits of having a summer unplugged!
