When I came home for the summer I decided that I needed to get a temporary job. So, I became a full-time cashier at Walmart. Many people thought I was a little crazy to be "wasting" my summer working, but I'm doing this to better myself.
Of course, there are both positives and negatives to having a summer job. There are many positives to having a full- or part-time job during the summer. The biggest positive is obviously that you are making money. You also have the opportunity to make new friends. Another major positive is that you are adding more work experience to your resume, and future job potentials will be impressed that a college student spent their whole summer working a full-time job.
It is extremely important to have excellent communication skills and a summer job allows you to work on and improve those vital skills. You learn how to work with people who might have opposing views from you or people you don't particularly like. In your future career you will have to be able to do this in a professional manner, so this will help you find the correct way to do so.
There are also some downsides to getting a job during your summer break from classes and studying. One is that you don't have a ton of free time to do as you please. You have to plan outings weeks in advance so you can request those particular days off. You can't go on spontaneous road trips with your friends or family members. Another negative is that it can get exhausting working three or four full shifts in a row. I fully believe that all the positives outweigh the negatives.
Having a summer job teaches you responsibility and it helps you to prepare for your future career. Having a job during the summer gives you a sense of self-worth, because you know that you are doing something good for yourself and you are also learning many things to help improve on your personality. I don't regret having a full-time summer job at all. I have been able to make new friends and also earn money that I can put towards my college expenses. I improved my communication skills a great deal and I am building a resume that will look good to future job potentials.
