Summer- Expectation Versus. Reality

Whether its setting goals for ourselves that we don't end up accomplishing, or simply having things go differently than we imagined them, sometimes our summer expectations can be a bit off.

The months leading up to summer are filled with anticipation and excitement, but when the time actually comes, summer is not always exactly how we planned it. Whether it's setting goals for ourselves that we don't end up accomplishing, or simply having things go differently than we imagined them, sometimes our summer expectations can be a bit off. Although we hope each year that our summers turn out exactly how we want them to, we definitely have all experienced some of these expectations not becoming realities at some point in our lives.

1. Being Tan

Although everyone wants that perfect summer glow, not everyone can achieve it. Instead of spending hours in the sun just to have a painful sunburn, sometimes it has to be learned the hard way that faking it is the best way to go.

2. Summer Flings

Contrary to the popular movie "Grease," Summer loving is certainly not "a blast." Although we all aspire to be like Allie and Noah from "The Notebook," the chances of that happening are very slim, and the break ups always seem to be messy.

3. Eating Healthily

Many people have the goal of starting to eat healthily over the summer. Although we have every intension of doing this, and even start off our weeks off on the right track, many of us have a weakness during the summertime.

4. Working Out

Going along with the goal of eating healthily during the summer, many of us aspire to be workout fiends as well. (It is bikini and crop top season after all.) Working out is all good and fun until we realize that the weather conditions are not ideal for running or heavy lifting, and although we definitely will be getting a good sweat, lounging by the pool starts looking like the better option.

5. Going to the Beach

The beach can be a relaxing place to visit or vacation, but it's not all rainbows and unicorns. From sand to seagulls, there are many things we forget to take into account while planning our beach trips.

6. Taking Artsy Pictures

Summer is here and we all know what that means... time to fill up our Instagrams with super artsy summery pics with your best friends! From one of your friends claiming that she looks like a cow in the only picture that we like, to being extremely awkward with our poses, finding the perfect summer pictures can be very difficult.

7. Hanging out with Friends

After a long school year of not seeing our friends, we impatiently anticipate the arrival of each of our friends back home from school. We discuss all of the fun things we are going to do over the summer, but forget one small detail. We are all broke college students and will be spending most of our days at work.

Despite these expectations versus realities, somehow every summer still manages to be great. We make friends with the seagulls at the beach, money that we can spend next year at school, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
