As the school year draws to a close there is only one thing on everyone’s mind: summer break. Three blissful months of doing nothing but catching up on your favorite Netflix shows, road trips and absolutely no studying or homework. For the first month, summer break was everything I dreamed it would be. But then everything became monotonous. Being stuck at home day after day gets tiresome and now my greatest wish is for summer break to end. Don’t be like me and get stuck in monotony. Instead, use summer break as a time for growth and fun.
Summer Jobs
Summer is the perfect time to get a job or pick up more hours at your current one. There’s less responsibilities in your life with homework out of the way, so bring in the money while you can. Try to find jobs that will help you with your career goals but if you can’t, there’s nothing wrong with fast food or retail. Those kinds of jobs are always hiring and looking for seasonal help. Besides, it doesn’t really matter what job you have, just what you learn from being there.
Friend Dates
Usually, a lot of movies come out during the summer and the weather is perfect for beach trips or hikes. Grab a friend and go explore your city or maybe a new one. If you’re sitting around bored at home, chances are some of your friends are suffering too. Time with friends is always a welcome part of summer break.
Road Trips
If you’re feeling adventurous and you love to drive, go on a trip to another state, another city, or a famous landmark. You don’t have to go far to enjoy a road trip with friends or family because it’s not about the distance, but about the time spent with the ones you love. Road trips are also excellent times for bonding and learning new things about your travel companions.
Volunteer
If you can’t find a job or if you have a job but you still have too much free time on your hands, try volunteering. There are tons of organizations and activities to help out with. A great website for finding opportunities that match your interests is volunteermatch.org. They have the most recent opportunities and you can search things that you would be interested in. Giving back is always a fulfilling and fun way to end summer boredom.
Develop Your Hobbies
Do you have something you are absolutely passionate about or you love to do? Summer is the perfect time to develop your skills or spend time doing something you love. It’s also a great time to find new hobbies or interests. So be daring and try new things. If you think you could never be good at a certain activity, try it. You may be surprised and find that this activity you’ve been avoiding is something you’ll end up loving.
Ultimately, summer break doesn’t have to be dull or turn you into a couch potato. Use this time wisely. Enjoy your Netflix but also don’t be afraid to go out into the world and do something different. These are only a few suggestions of what you could do to liven up your summer. The possibilities are endless.
