The last time I’ve listened to a movie soundtrack in its entirety would have to be the in 2005 when Disney Channel graced us with DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movie) Camp Rock but when I saw Suicide Squad theates I found myself tapping my feet to the underlying melodies. The squad was kicking butt and the music was killing it too.
I debated whether to write anything about the film-which has had mix reviews from both audiences and critics. But once my ears were subject to playlist that could be the birth child of a teenage Wednesday Adams, I had to spread the good news.
The soundtrack was killer, a must listen. For those who are avid hip-hoppers you will recognize big names like Rick Ross, Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign and Lil Wayne. Alternative band enthusiast will notice the presence of bands like X Ambassadors, Imagine Dragons, Twenty-One Pilots, and Panic at the Disco. I found the pairing of these two genres interesting. I wouldn’t necessarily think of Rick Ross fans to rocking out to Imagine Dragons. But when you hear the song Sucker for Pain, the different sounds just work.
Looking at the soundtrack from top to bottom the album opens with Purple Lamborghini featuring Skrillex and Rick Ross. It’s the Joker’s theme song. The erratic melody and repetitive nature illustrates the crazed mind of the notorious Gotham City villain.
Sucker for Pain is the Suicide Squad’s Anthem. The song shares the Why the Suicide Squad does what it does as evident in the following lyrics:
Love and the loyalty that's what we stand for
Alienated by society, all this pressure give me anxiety
Walk slow through the fire
Like, who gon' try us?
Feeling the world go against us
So we put the world on our shoulders
-Dolla $ign, Sucker For Pain
The soundtrack has unique blend of two polarly different musical genres. The choice of music genre is impactful. Audiences of alternative music and rap and are primarily marginalized groups or people who are seen as outcast by society. The members of the suicide squad are outcast in the most literal sense. They are casted out of Gotham City to the Belle Reve Penitentiary. The music allows us to feel their anger, looniness and their lunacy at times. The decision underline makes sense for the film, as the Suicide Squad are themselves marginalized. Alternative music and rap from their genesis has always strived to challenge the majority. They strive to be themselves unapologetically. The squad never relinquishes “Bad Guy” from their identity even after they save the world because they know, the world will only and always see them as villians.
All-in-all the soundtrack is great collaborative project that I plan to keep in my Spotify library for years to come. Plus, it’s the perfect playlist for halloweekend. The high caliber of this album was unexpected especially from a superhero movie. If I’m being honest the soundtrack is two times as good as the movie. Maybe, Marvel is answer with soundtrack featuring Drake, the Throne and RiRi-I would die!
