Is 'Suicide Squad' As Bad As The Bad Guys In It?
Coming Soon

On August 5, the action, adventure and comedy movie "Suicide Squad" was released into theaters across the world. Like every movie, the critics have the advantage of seeing the movie before everyone else. Prior to seeing the film on opening day, I made the mistake of reading the critics' reviews about this anticipated movie. Scrolling through IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes websites, I came across unsettling reviews of the film. One critic wrote, "Sometimes it's good to be bad. In "Suicide Squad's" case, bad is just plain bad. It gives villainy a bad name." Seeing comments like these did not alter my mind on wanting to see the movie, but it made me skeptical about whether or not the film was going to live up to my potential.

On opening night I got my ticket for a showing of the film. I decided to go in with an open mind. I was not going to think about what the critics said and decide for myself how I feel about the film. I paid close attention to small details throughout the movie and took in the lines that the characters said.

The visuals, sets, special effects and superb acting shined throughout the movie. The soundtrack was absolutely incredible and includes "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen and "Heathens" by Twenty-One Pilots.

"Suicide Squad" soundtrack.

Although the visuals were incredible, the script was lacking something. Each character could have been given more lines and some, more screen time. The Joker (Mr. J) was one of the characters that was advertised and talked about the most, yet he was one of the characters with the least amount of screen time. Jared Leto, who plays The Joker, claims that over 10 minutes of The Joker's screen time was cut from the movie.

If paid close attention to, a viewer will notice that there is a small, but noticeable flaw in the movie. Before the final cuts, The Joker was supposed to have a scene where he impersonates Batman. This scene was taken out and the following scene was left in. The scene that follows was not re-shot, so the evidence of the previous scene is clear. The Joker has a thick, black circle around his mouth. That black circle was a mark left from impersonating Batman (pictured below). The scene that follows of The Joker in his lair was not re-shot, so the visual mark is seen. This may seem tiny and unimportant, but it's a careless move from the director.

Here's the difference in another scene.

Killer Croc and Boomerang are two interesting characters that were not given enough explanation. Throughout the movie, bits and pieces are shown that make these characters seem humorous and captivating. By giving them the captivating characteristics, it leads the viewer to want to know more about them. Also, the abusive relationship between Harley Quinn and The Joker is touched upon during the film, but the other romances are in the shadows. One can say that throughout the movie Harley Quinn and Deadshot have a hidden romance. Their interactions and chemistry can be closely looked at, but is quickly disregarded.

Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis, can be seen as one of the baddest characters in the film. Although she is one of the main characters, all of the 'bad guys' tend to outshine her performance. Waller is the mastermind behind assembling the Squad, which makes her the 'badass' behind the dangerous group.

As the movie came to an end, there were many scenes that followed closely with the animated version, "Batman: Assault on Arkham." Other scenes were shocking and some were very predictable. Part of the ending of the film was weak compared to the entire movie. The first part featuring Enchantress was fairly well done, but the last scene was predictable. Although it was an ending that fans of Harley Quinn and The Joker's relationship wanted, it was very abrupt.

Overall, the movie was not as bad as the critics made it out to be. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and in order to decide if it is good or not, your best bet is to see it for yourself. My opinions: I believe the movie should have been longer or broken up into two parts. The beginning focused on introducing the major characters, which was time consuming, but needed. If the movie was longer or split in parts, it could have been executed with more detail and specific scenes would not have had to been deleted. Also, DO NOT see the movie in 3D. Although 3D can be cool, it takes away from the movie and makes everything look darker and more fuzzy.

If you have the opportunity, definitely go and see the movie for yourself. Try not to let the critics alter your opinion and go in with an open mind. It may have not been DC's best movie, but it for sure was not the worst.

Tickets for the movie can be found on Fandango.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
