1. Stay calm
You are probably feeling scared, but staying calm is important. If you stay calm (or at least pretend you are calm) it will make the other person feel less panicky and scared.
2. Encourage them to call the suicide hotline
The suicide hotline helps millions of people and if a person is suicidal, they should be encouraged to call the hotline or text the crisis text line. The people at the hotline will assure their safety and help them with a safe plan for after they hang up.
3. Reassure them that you are there for them
A person who is suicidal often feels alone so reassuring you are there for them is important.
4. Have an open mind
Having an open mind is important. Don't assume anything and remember that just because you don't understand why they are suicidal, doesn't mean that they aren't.
5. Make sure they are not alone
If they are alone, encourage them to go somewhere or invite someone over so they don't have to deal with this on their own.
6. Think before you speak
When someone is suicidal they are really sensitive. Thinking before you speak is important. Don't say anything like "You have a great life, you should be thankful" or "You shouldn't be feeling this way."
7. Remind them that they are loved and wanted
Most likely this person is feeling as though if they were gone, they wouldn't be missed. Reassure them they are loved and wanted.
