“It’s just a phase, you’ll meet the right man one day.”, “How are you going to get a husband if you can’t cook?”, “You know, God doesn’t hate you and you can still go to church if you have this lifestyle.
“What made you choose the ‘lesbian’ lifestyle?” My lifestyle? If you think that I chose to be gay, you must be absolutely insane. It’s not easy to feel judged while holding hands with my girlfriend or be too afraid to be who I am in many circumstances. I don’t want to meet “the right man.” That is not who I am and not who I ever want to be. I am so proud to be with the most beautiful woman in the entire world. No, I will not kiss her in front of you, we will not have a threesome with you, and we definitely don’t need your catcalls or explanations of your sexual fantasies. I’m not interested.
“Well how do you really know that you are gay?” How do I know that I’m gay? Well how do you know that you’re straight? Next time you feel the need to ask a bigoted question why don’t you just save us all of the trouble and google it to avoid making me feel like crap. I never once chose to be gay. I love who I am and would never change that. This is one of my least favorite questions because never once does a straight person have to be asked why they like their opposite identified sex. I don’t need you to understand, I just need to be accepted whether or not you get it. I know that I’m gay but how I know I am is none of your damn business.
“You’re such a pretty girl, why waste that with another girl?” What am I wasting with another girl? My beauty? Ew. I have someone who tells me daily how beautiful I am. I don’t need validation from a man, I don’t need to be whistled at, and I shouldn’t have to cook for anyone to be considered a good mating partner.
My sexuality is not a phase. If you think it is a phase, I really wish you the best with the rest of your life because no part of me wants your negativity in my life. I am happy. I am happier than I ever have been. I am living my truth and if that’s not good enough for you, I don’t need you. I am part of the most amazing, loving, and supportive community I know. We will continue to fight for what we and all of our allies know is right. Love is love and no one can ever take that away from us.
