You think in a democratic political system, voting to make the country better would be easy. You think that the candidates would be honest. You think media converge would be impractical, fair, or at least say that they have a bias. You think that the parties would represent their voters. You think your vote would make a difference. You would think that it wasn't about the money.
Every election cycle, there's always the same problems. Voters feel like there are only two choices. The third party choices historically have never won and have only served to divide the vote. Furthermore, the traditional media generally focuses on two main parties and their lead candidates. As the election goes on and on, the lies come out more and more. Politics have become less about issues that plague society and more about branding your opponent, yourself, and that issue. Branding is everything. Just say what the voters want to hear, and when you get into office who cares about what happens. The companies pay for your election anyway.
Before both parties get a representative to run in the race, there's the process to get a representative. It should be just to go to the polls on X date and vote for your favorite candidate and be done. However, that's not how it works, depending on where you live, there are primaries and caucuses. There is no reason why it shouldn't be standardized, I mean it's all the same party. The party should formalize the process. In some states, the caucus means nothing in the end. Oh, and super delegates are the best thing in the world. The people vote for who they want unless the party leaders disagree, and there goes that choice. America is the land of freedom and choice, There shouldn't be a process to take away the choice of the voters. What separates America from a country like North Korea who has the illusion of choice?
Voting is in a situation as well. Depending on the area, the wait might be a few minutes to hours on end. People don't have time to get off work and wait in line to vote. There is no reason that there shouldnt be a national holiday to vote. People should have the opportunity to be able to vote. A holiday would allow them to not have work and just vote instead. It shouldn't be a decision between the two since both vastly affect lives. The method of voting is also flawed. Voting machines can be tampered with and thus votes could even worth even less. There has not been a problem with voting by paper and having an independent party tally the votes. It might take longer, but it's secure. There's also the problem of "voter fraud." Minorities and the lower class have been disadvantaged by voter ID laws. Don't ask for an ID from a voter when it is mind blowing hard for them to get an ID in the first place. Or even worse, make it harder for them to get an ID at all by limiting the offices available to them for this purpose.
Politics shouldn't be hard at all. It should be a group of people that works for the common good of the United States, not for money. They should do it because they want to see this country succeed, not to fill their pockets. Companies shouldn't rule over our government. The government should be able to make the lives of the general public better not just the 1%. So just think what it means to have government and the meaning of democracy.
