If someone told a guy that he is acting "like a girl" odds are he would feel like he wasn't doing well enough. That he is weak. Have you ever wondered; since when did the phrase, "like a girl" mean something negative?
This ad shows that a girl’s confidence decreases as she gets older. When the younger girls were told to do something “like a girl” they did the best they could. When they ran they put their head down and really showed they were giving everything they had. When the teenage girls were told the same thing, they showed the negative stigma around the phrase. They acted like they couldn’t throw a ball. When they were pretending to run, they flailed their arms and acted worried about their hair getting messy.
This phrase is demoralizing towards girls, but why? Doing something "like a girl" should never mean something negative. Why are we belittled for being who we are? Also, why are we belittling ourselves? Yes, guys are going to always think they’re better but why are we allowing this? Girls are not weak, dumb, small or not capable of doing things as good as guys can.
There are so many sayings that are degrading towards women:
"Women belong in the kitchen."
Everyone belongs in the kitchen… the kitchen has food and we all love food.
“Stop PMSing.”
Sometimes I'm in a bad mood? It doesn't always mean I have my period when I'm upset. It's crazy to me when a guy say "what do you have your period" when girls are mad about something. No, I don't have this attitude because of my period. I have this attitude because something you said just pissed me off.
“Grow a pair.”
I hate to state the obvious but what does growing a pair have to do with anything? Last time I checked whenever you hit a guy’s “pair” he normally bends over and cries. I hate crying so, no I will not grow a pair.
This phrases need to stop. I think of all the strength women have and everything we have overcame. In the past, women were found in the house. Their job was to clean, cook, take care of the children and make their husband happy. Now look at women, we’re getting our own education, gaining higher positions in the government and in the work force, all while looking good doing it! We shouldn’t ever belittle ourselves or allow someone to belittle us.
We should never be ashamed to act "like a girl" because we are girls. We need to show people that we're proud to be who we are.
