There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between Spring semester and Summer vacation, between misery and joy, and it lies between the pit of student's fears and the summit of their knowledge. This is the dimension of marathon cramming sessions. It is an area which we call Stu(dying). *cue "The Twilight Zone" theme song
It's that time of the year again: final exams are coming up, final papers are due, and the library has become your new home. If you're like me, the library has also become a place of both misery and comfort. It sucks your life force from you, but it's also the only place you can get anything done. You're there so much that you begin to forget what your real home actually looks like. You're slowly dying while you're studying.
It will all be over soon, but, in the meantime, here's some things that have probably happened to you that indicate you've spent too much time in the library stu(dying):
When you have a favorite computer or desk and you want to tell someone who's using it to kindly get off!
And then you remember that this is a public space, not your personal bedroom.
When you have more food on your computer desk than you do in your fridge at home.
Hey, you need snacks for brain power!
When you feel like the library security guards are your new BFFs because they consistently come by to check on you.
Although they're probably just doing nightly head counts.
When you go outside for a fresh air break only to find out the seasons have literally changed since the last time you were outside.
It was like 65 degrees this morning, now it's snowing!? How long have I been in there?!
When you have to bring an overnight bag to the library to pull an all-nighter.
Rollin' up into the library like:
Filled with snacks, of course, but also a change of clothes in case you don't have time to go home before class the next day.
When you're afraid the baristas at Wired Scholar might cut you off because you've gotten about 200 cups of coffee within the last 12 hours.
When you've been on the silent third floor for so long that you can't get your voice to work the next time you try to talk.
When you want to murder someone for interrupting your study flow.
When you see people come and go, all while you're still sitting at the same computer wishing you were free like them.
When you read over the last thing you typed in your essay and realize it's not even English.
Or is it English and your brain just can't process it? Either way, not a good sign.
When your friends and loved ones are complaining that they haven't seen you in days or even weeks, and they wonder if you have a secret double life.
But you know the truth; you've just been busy stu(dying).
It'll be over soon and hopefully, it will all be worth it. Hang in there, there's only so much stu(dying) you can do in one semester. Summer vacation is right around the corner.
