I studied abroad my first semester of my freshmen year in Ireland through a unique program offered at Drexel University. This opportunity was far more than just a fun experience. No matter what year you study abroad, integrating yourself into a different culture is enriching, fulfilling and frankly the best decision you will ever make. Here are 11 lessons you will learn when studying abroad...
1. The bubble in which we live is entirely too small.
There are approximately 196 countries in the world. How many have you been to? Studying abroad will teach you the value in experience and culture. The international food section in the super Target is not cultural experience. Go out and find the real thing.
2. Culture should be appreciated: not appropriated, not diminished and not dismissed.
3. Sometimes all you need to do is put down your phone.
Let me tell you, the cover photo for this article looked a lot better in person. You will come across some unexplainable experiences. Make sure you are looking up from your phone so you don't miss it.
4. You, as a person, are so small in this world of seven billion, but have the power to be instrumental.
You'll learn that one person can make a world of difference (punny, I know.)
5. New things can be scary, but absolutely thrilling.
6. It’s okay to miss people and depend on some safety nets...
7. So long as they don’t keep you from fulfilling your goals.
Missing people back home is completely 100% normal. Skype and FaceTime are a thing for a reason. However, don't let missing people stop you from exploring the place you're studying. It is a once in a lifetime experience. Take advantage.
8. There’s nothing wrong with eating potatoes for every meal.
Okay, maybe this is specific to Ireland…. but replace this with any food the country you're studying in does well. You'll appreciate small things… like baked potatoes and mashed potatoes.
9. Our purpose is much larger than complaining about essays and pulling all nighters.
You will learn that there is much more to life than drinking three cups of coffee to have a hot date with your bio textbook all night in the library. You'll learn to take time to explore, even in little ways.
10. Being prepared is key.
You're talking to the girl who forgot to pack an umbrella in her suitcase on the way to Ireland. You'll learn to take care of yourself. If you forget something, it is all on you. You'll become prepared for anything.
11. You'll learn to be… well, you.
You'll learn who you are when in an entirely new place in which you know very few people. You’ll learn your strengths. Your weaknesses. You’ll make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. You’ll learn to be a better version of yourself.
