Being abroad is no big deal right? Wrong! Being in another country is both amazing, and nerve-wracking, so be prepared! As you approach the airport gate a whirlwind of emotions will take your breath away! Tears will emerge and you’ll watch as your parents wave goodbye... It's not always easy leaving your comfort zone behind, but I promise that you'll have the most exhilarating trip ahead of you!
What seemed to be an everlasting plane ride is finally over and all you'll want to do is get some sleep. However, I'm sure your loved ones have been up all night hoping you've landed safely so check in! You’re about to begin the most amazing trip of your life thus far so strap on your seatbelts, ladies, and gentlemen!
If you’re staying with a host family there are a few simple rules I have for you before you even arrive. First off, if you’re in a European country know ahead of time to expect kisses, lots, and lots of them! You'll become acquainted with it, it’ll become a habit of yours within a few days. Second, never be afraid to speak to your family about food and normal habits, it’s always better to say something ahead of time instead of not eating one night! Be kind and offer to help, you’re now apart of the family! Lastly, enjoy the family with all your might, they’re just as excited to have a foreigner in their house as you are being there!
You’re allowed to take pictures as long as you are taking the time to enjoy the new world for yourself, not constantly on your phone. It’s important to keep in touch with family, but wait until you’re in for the night. Be sure to capture every single wonder of your new city, including the very beautiful men... I swear there’s something in that water! Be sure to eat their known delicacies, but eat wisely, it’s important to stay healthy for all that walking around you’ll be doing.
Make all the friends you can while being safe. Go out clubbing and have a good time but still be very cautious while meeting new people. Be sure to bring your friends from the states or someone you trust in the family to go with you, safety always comes first in a foreign country! A majority of cities that students travel to are very safe with plenty of police officers ready to help, so don't worry too much. Make it a priority upon arrival to know the emergency phone numbers if you ever find yourself in a sticky situation. There’s not a huge chance you will ever need them, but always keep them handy! Make sure you know your program leaders or university contacts in case you need their help too. Everyone involved in your program wants to make sure you have a safe, fun, and productive trip so never be afraid to ask them any questions, even if it’s as simple as asking for the best eatery or cafe!
Finally, if you’re really unhappy, I advise you to talk to the people in charge of your trip on what to do. Please don’t spend your whole experience unhappy because it’s just not worth it. It can get to be a lot sometimes, and you don't want to get hung up all the time missing your country. Better to be happy then put yourself in misery... I promise nobody will judge you, you're not alone!
Take my advice and make the most of everything in your experience, it’s worth the amazing sights, food, and people! You’ll never forget the ups and downs of your abroad experience, and I challenge you to encourage everyone to go abroad at some point in their lives!
