Musical artist Lady Gaga came out with a new music video on September 18th that brings awareness to sexual attacks happening on college campuses. The video contains graphic content that warns its viewers of the honest truths occurring regularly in our communities.
While Gaga is being praised for presenting such a tough public topic, some viewers responded differently. Gaga’s ‘Til It Happens To You’ has shocked its viewers in many ways. One rape victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, says that the video doesn't resonate so well with her. She says that there are parts that just aren't realistic.
"I feel like they portrayed the attacker as a random guy that can just walk into your room whenever he wants," the victim said, "and the reality is that it’s usually like a tall, dark, handsome guy out and about that you would have to look out for."
The victim wishes that the video would have shown more realistic scenes, instead of what appears to be strangers walking freely into female's rooms. She says the video just missed the overall mark.
For one woman, not personally affected by a campus sexual assault, the video was startling. Camille Marques says that its graphic content caught her by surprise. Near the end of the video, Gaga included some statistics that Marques says opened her eyes.
"One in 5 women being attacked is a large number," Marques said. "Just in this room there’s four of us, so it could happen to anyone. It's just alarming."
Gaga originally recorded the track for a documentary film that portrays this shocking statistic about campus rape in the United States. After the film, she released the music video furthering her stand on the issue. Both victims and non-victims of sexual assault may see the video differently and react in very different ways, but one thing is for sure, Lady Gaga accomplished her goal-- to raise awareness to a serious problem. Her video currently has over 18 million views.
