Student Problems Posts are Problematic:
Solve the problem, do not joke about it.
On nearly every social media site you can think of, an account exists to laugh off serious problems that college students may encounter while they are in college. From having very little money to having problems in class these accounts, commonly known as Student Problems or some variation post funny memes and gifs about problems that should be taken seriously. Sometimes you cannot fix having little money, but you can fix the academic-related problems these accounts post about such as procrastination and failing grades. I do not understand why people would rather laugh off problems that can seriously affect their GPA than do something about them. We should not reward students for procastinating on their assignments or for failing their tests.
I will admit the first few times I visited the Student Problems page I thought the posts were hilarious and extremely relateable. However, as the Spring Semester at CSULB comes to an end, I am finding myself becoming more annoyed at the Student Problems posts that are flooding my Facebook feed. I do not need to know that you have gotten yourself into trouble by procrastinating most of the semester. Procrastination is not a quality to be proud of because when you procrastinate you increase your stress and do not churn out your best work. It is always better to get assignments done early because you will have more time to think about the requirements and do a great job instead of an okay job. Student Problems pages only serve to glorify procrastination and make people less likely to fix it because their behavior is getting likes and comments on social media.
The second most common post shared from Student Problems pages usually relates to failing a test or a class. These kinds of posts love to add that the person who failed the test studied extremely hard and still failed. Granted, there are some classes such as Engineering Classes that teach difficult material, so studying hard and still not doing well on a test is warranted. However, it is not warranted for 100 level Liberal Arts course such as English, History, or Political Science. You most likely failed the test because you did not go over the material enough or chose not to pay attention in class. Stop saying you studied hard, but the class and professor are dumb because you failed. It is not the professor’s fault if you failed it is yours. You need to take responsibility for your failure and make sure it does not happen again instead of laughing about it.
College students need to be more responsible about their studies because there is not someone reminding you to do your homework or to study for your tests constantly. To do well in college, you need to be self-motivated and be willing to take responsibility for your missteps. I think Student Problems pages only serve to glorify bad behavior because these pages get many likes and comments on social media. Instead of laughing off the gravity of procrastination or of low grades find a way to overcome the problem.
