Being an English major was one of the best decisions of my life. I have created so many friendships with people who have the same interests as me. When people ask me what my major is, 99% of the time I get asked cliche questions that would drive anyone crazy. Being an English major isn't just about the schoolwork, it also intermingles with your life outside of the classroom. Here are some English major struggles and things we have to deal with on the daily:
1. So, you want to be a teacher?
Well, not necessarily. You know, you can do a lot more things with an English degree than just teach.
2. Your friends always ask for you to write their papers
Depending on the subject, how long it has to be, and if you're willing to pay me, I'll think about it.
3. Seeing people's grammar mistakes
I'm sorry, but unless YOU'RE (THE CORRECT CONTRACTION FOR YOU ARE) under the age of 13, if you use the wrong form of "there, their, they're" or "you're and your," I'm probably going to correct you. In a mean way. Actually, 13-year-olds probably know the difference.
4. People thinking it's an easy major
The amount of hours spent on reading, writing, editing, and studying is just as much, if not more, than any other major in college.
5. Experiencing writer's block
Being an English major, I can say that even my first rough draft has to be perfect, and it sucks when you can't think of what to write and how to write it. Everyone experiences writer's block but it hits us on a more personal level.
6. Hearing that English majors don't make a lot of money
Just like any degree, there are some people who don't even utilize their degree in their careers. At least you still have one. Oh, and according to the United States Department of Labor, "as of May 2014 the average starting salary of an English major is $33,574, compared to the national mean annual salary of $47,230 for all occupations, regardless of level." Not too shabby.
7. Constantly being asked how to spell a word
8. Getting asked what your favorite books are
9. No one getting your jokes
Hehe. This one's bad.
10. It's truly the best major no matter what anyone says
Being an English major has changed my life. It opened so many opportunities for me and I have met so many talented and incredible people. If you don't know what to major in when going to college and you enjoy reading and writing, try majoring in English! There are a few different concentrations within the major and you can do so many things with the degree.
