College is all about freedom and new adventures, but once you are in school and you have all this freedom, you realize that with freedom comes responsibility, and thats not as fun as you imagined. College helps you to see that the real world isn't as fun as the pictures you see and the stories you hear. Being an adult is kinda hard; like now I have to grocery shop on my own. What is that about? Paying rent, cooking and doing your own laundry -- life is full of so many struggles these days. I would hire a maid if I wasn't a broke college kid trying to make it in the real world. And then there's the biggest struggle of them all: waking up to go to work.
Nothing is worst than a day school is out and you still have to go to work because you need money to feed your Amaretto Sour addiction on Thursday nights. It's the 21st century and I am still unable to make money while laying in bed and watch Netflix, and that is just not okay with me. It especially sucks when all of your friends get to go enjoy a day by the pool and you are stuck working all day, but it's always worth it on pay day.
School might just be the worst struggle to ever happen, though. I know how everyone tells you to "enjoy it" because one day you will miss it, but I have this strange feeling that I won't miss spending 36 hours studying Spanish and still getting a D on the test. Yes, college is great and the freedom is nice, but this whole being an adult nonsense makes me miss Disney Channel movies and my mom tucking me in at night. Our entire childhood we wished to be grown ups, but in all reality once you get here and you are an adult, it hits you that being a kid was much more fun.
Paying for things on my own is awfully scary as well. Who knew everything would cost so much once we had to start paying for it on our own? There is nothing worse than having to decide between gas for the week, or the super cute dress from your favorite boutique... and that usually ends in the realization that I am going to need a bike because I got the dress instead. I just need an endless bank account to get me through college and then I will be able to get my life together and have my own money. So if my fairy godmother is out there, feel free to hook a sister up.
Even though being an adult is pretty scary and full of serious struggles, it's always fun to be on your own and experience new things. You always feel so accomplished when you make your own dinner or use the money you earned working late to buy the new outfit you have been saving up for. Sometimes it is alright to buy the dress instead of the gas, or eat sandwiches for 2 weeks so you can go out on the weekends.
College is about compromise and learning how to survive the real world. Hopefully, after it's all over, you'll realize that college has taught you how to make it on your own.
