There may come a time when you have to write a research paper for a class you’re in. But, of course there are steps to writing a successful research paper. So, you came to the right place. Before you arrive at the computer clueless and afraid with hopes that your paper will magically write itself, you should have a clear path in structuring your paper. Trust me iIve been there done that. What always helps me for these tedious assignments includes creating an outline. Outlines provide a step by step visual to the successful outcome of your paper. Here is how you make an outline for your upcoming research paper. You should start the outline of research paper at least 12-14 days before the due date your assignment. We want to break that stereotype of the average, traditional, work hard play hard college student with stellar procrastination habits.
Steps
- You want to know what you are researching. Be sure to choose a topic that is strategic and approved by your instructor. Therefore, you may want to ask an appropriate question and come up with your thesis statement. If you need help with this don’t be afraid to ask your instructor. Your thesis statement will be the vehicle throughout your paper. The supporting evidence used should completely relate to defend and oppose your thesis. This should take place in your introductory paragraph(s)
- Go through your course’s notes. Find supporting ideas, key terms, theories, and notes that you will incorporate in your paper to reflect the knowledge that you are taking away from the course. (Trust me, instructors love this. This will show that you are attentive and making outside connections as a base for your paper.)
- Depending on the length of your research paper and what you are researching you want to have *insert amount of sources here* that support/oppose your argument. These will be introduced in your body paragraphs. You should look for sources using your institution's database. If you are not sure what this is going to your school’s library information center.
- Lastly, you want to have a clear conclusion that amplifies the concluding purpose of your research. Your last sentence should be a mind stimulating statement or idea. You know, that drop the mic moment we’ve all been waiting for.
I usually structure my research papers like this. It works for me so I believe it should work for you. I used to get confused as to how I should structure my paper, where to put my evidence and so much more but using this method has created clarity for me. Even including an opposing point is highly recommended and appreciated when writing research papers!
