When you feel like you are drowning in the responsibilities that life throws at you and simply don't have time for all the things you want to do, you may get the urge to give up. You question whether you will be able to get out of bed the next morning because you have only slept for a few hours. You wonder if you will be able to make it through the rest of your college years and still have the ability to mentally function or end up absolutely insane. You find yourself distracted in class because you realize you forgot to eat lunch. You find yourself missing home, missing the way things used to be and missing old friends.
These are all worries and concerns that every college student is entitled to. Just don’t cling to them or make any irrational decisions based on them because you currently don't have a clear mind. If this describes your current situation and you are desperate to lift the stress from your shoulders, simply go get lost.
I am serious — go get lost. Just go, by yourself or even with a friend or two. Go somewhere you've never been or just travel with no end destination in mind. There is nothing as freeing as just letting go and having nothing to worry about. Maybe you just want to walk in the wild for hours or drive and listen to music with the windows down. Perhaps you just want to drive around on back roads for hours and look for a possum to catch.
Doing this alone is a mind settling experience because you have freedom to do anything you want. You can enjoy the silence that is so hard to find in a college setting, or you can sing along with a song at the top of your lungs. These times when you are completely alone are a rare jewel for any college student.
With a friend or two, you still get the stress relief, and at the same time, form a strong bond that a lot of people never get to have. There is something about getting lost with your friends that draws you all closer and of course, makes for a great story to tell.
You may be telling yourself, “Wow that sounds like a great idea if only I had time.” Stop thinking like that. You have to get your priorities straight and put responsibilities on the list where they belong, which is not at the top. You have to make time for yourself to take a break and just enjoy the things and even the people around you. I promise, your mood and outlook will be a lot different if you can just successfully clear your mind, and this is one of the most effective ways.
Now, go out there for an adventure and get lost!
