It's getting to that point in the college semester where all of us are stressed. Stressed about our grades, stressed about our futures or just stressed out about life in general. If you find yourself at this point, it's okay! You're not alone. But there is something that I have found extremely helpful when I find myself stressed out: creating artwork.
Now, I know what you're going to say. "But I'm not good at painting or drawing or anything involving art." Trust me, I still say those things to this day (ask any of my friends). But art doesn't have to be defined by your skill. I am a double science major, so when I say that art is not my forte, I'm not kidding. But I have found it to be a of creative outlet.
I am able to channel my stress into whatever I decide to create. I have learned that it doesn't even have to be good. As long as it makes me happy and de-stressed, that is all that matters. Whether it be painting something on a canvas or just some random doodle in my notebook, I almost always find myself more relaxed after. I often forget what I am stressed about for the time being because I am putting all my energy into whatever I am making.
It also doesn't have to be painting or drawing something, I have found that photography also helps me de-stress. Going outside on my beautiful campus to take pictures helps me to get a brain break from studying and to have a little fun with my camera. I always love going through all the pictures afterward to re-watch the progression of pictures (and maybe even find a new Instagram picture, too).
College is hard, and it can be so easy to get stressed out. It is important to find a way to channel that stress in a healthy way. For me, I have found an outlet in creating art. I urge you to find some kind of creative outlet as well to help you manage your stress. Or, if you are really adamant and set on the fact that a creative outlet just isn't for you, then find some other outlet! Maybe that can be working out or reading a book for pleasure. However, if you pick art to be your creative outlet, you can even find yourself lucky because you now have a built-in way to make presents for all your friends' birthdays (or for your little if you're in a sorority)! But regardless, it is extremely beneficial to both your physical and mental health to find a way to channel your stress. We all get stressed, and that's okay! It's the way we manage it that is important!
