The Little-Known Strength Of Saint Mary's

These are my ideas on the Five Core Principles during De La Salle Week.

So, as I am sure some people know, Saint Mary's is about to start De La Salle Week, which means there will be several events that are happening around campus. Out of all of the De La Salle Week events there is one that I feel is extremely important for every student to try to attend at least once. That event is the Five Core Dinner. This event is important for several reasons.

I think that students should attend this event so that they can gain a real understanding of the five Lasallian Core Principles. These principles are high standards that our campus strives toward. Before I attended the Five Core Dinner last year I knew two of the five principles, and I did not really have a respect or understanding for them. Today I can name all five of the Lasallian Core Principles (Quality Education, Concern for the Poor and Social Justice, Faith in the Presence of God, Inclusive Community, and Respect for All Persons). Each one is important in maintaining the Lasallian aspect of our college that makes us such a strong community. I believe that Saint Mary's would not have its current campus environment if we didn't follow these principles.

I do have a favorite of the five principles, one that I hold in the highest regards here at Saint Mary's. My favorite principle on this campus is Inclusive Community. This is my favorite principle because I have seen how several organizations on this campus operate (through my own or my friends' involvement in them) and how they work toward maintaining that feeling of inclusivity on our campus. A fair amount of our on-campus leaders have been through training to help them be more inclusive. What shocks me, however is the number of people on this campus unaware of the effort that our organizations go through to make everyone feel included. I am not, however, surprised by the number of people who do not know about the Five Core Principles. I am just hoping to increase the awareness of them.

This brings me back to the Five Core Dinner, and why I think everyone who is able to attend should at least once. This dinner is probably the easiest way a student can learn about our Five Core Principles, and talk about the goals of each principle with their table. Seeing how Lasallian is one of the three pillars our campus is founded on I just think that we as a student body should know a little bit about what that means. Like I said at the beginning, De La Salle Week is about to start. Now would be a great time for those who might not know much about our Lasallian pillar to try to learn a little more.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Whether you met your new love interest online, through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
